This was NOT obvious before Snowden. Everyone kept making excuses for why encryption kept failing to be deployed to solve spam and assure privacy when it was the obvious best answer. We were constantly assured that no, our privacy was Very Important, best minds were working the problem, it would be solved any day now. We trusted the experts. It was unthinkable that there could be deliberate malice and sabotage at work.

Snowden revealed that to be a lie.
