The FBI routinely uses National Security Letters to impose gag orders on companies without an end date. We've filed a new brief telling the 9th Circuit that endless gag orders are unconstitutional. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/05/eff-supports-unnamed-company-bringing-end-endless-nsl-gag-orders
What do the Xinjiang police want to know when they check your phone? Well, if you've been abroad for "too long" they check for:
- WhatsApp, Viber, or Telegram
- other “unusual" software
- VPN usage
- “harmful URLs" in your browsing history

Pharma and biotech companies want to scrap the requirement that patents be "new and useful." Once they don't have to meet that basic standard, health care costs will rise. https://act.eff.org/action/tell-congress-we-don-t-need-more-bad-patents-8941b5c6-5bb1-4d93-9ca1-a2da87c4458e

One paper shows how you can use a hard drive to record sound. The paper's author then used this technique to record the audio for their preview video. Take a listen, it is pretty amazing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EHQCuWI2jg

If Facebook thinks that AI Edge - reading messages before/after encryption - is a security solution - they are smoking some really bad granola. It's a back door.
They are using your hardware to do the data mining and stealing your info.

How on earth did @PCMag manage to publish a piece on certificate authorities and only focus on the paid ones without a single mention of @letsencrypt? Can you comment on this @gleefulmischief? To conclude that "You usually get what you pay for" is grossly misleading. https://twitter.com/PCMag/status/1049419422362931200
@erikstl yes. In theory ;)
A bit more complicated in case your home is encrypted.
Also, be very careful when choosing the home partition in the installer. Be hesitant if it asks which FS to put on it. That basically means disaster ;)
Have a backup.
@ahangarha @purism they are. Just follow my clues. I'm on my phone here and looking them all up would be a pain :)

<<I do sort of love the fact that people think a species that can't manage a perfect 4-billion-year old self-sustaining solar-powered biosphere surrounded by its own self-generated forcefield are gonna somehow be able to build a viable space habitat. >>
This belief is the Atlas Shrugged myth, the idea that all the problems of Earth are caused by other people, the untermenschen, that if you just put all the self-selected supermen together you get paradise.
It's what's driving Silicon Valley's Cloud and Big Data and Disruption fixation. It's what's driving transhumanism and "rationalist" cults and Bitcoin and the alt-right. It's what's making SV ignore the inflated rents they're cursing cities with and the suffering that causes.
It's fascism.
No matter which social network you're on, following a diverse group of people helps you taking a peek at the other side of your personal filter bubble.
You don't have to agree with everything and everyone, but please, at least try to listen to people and their opinions.
It will help you appreciate your own life, and may just make you a little wiser.
Say hello to Telephant!
I've written a little Mastodon client for the Desktop - called Telephant - and am currently looking for beta testers!
Want to help out and don't mind compiling the app yourself? (Don't worry it's fairly straight forward and I've added detailed instructions to the README!)
Join me here:
https://github.com/muesli/telephant
Looking forward to hearing your feedback!
@ahangarha @purism straight in the footer of the signup page, as well as in the giving back blog post you'll find links to source. There you'll also find smilodon. Fdroid apps will come according to faq.
@lunduke oh. Cap. 😂
Q.E.D.
@lunduke reading age for native speakers. For the test of us it's more tricky.

In Idaho, a judge has ruled that law enforcement cannot compel a person to unlock their phone with a fingerprint because it would violate their 5th Amendment rights, following a similar ruling in California earlier this year.
