Jumping off what @blaine is saying here:

I work in professional fact-checking and content moderation for my day job at meedan.com and I have begun conversations about ways to do content moderation as a federated service that admins can pay to subscribe to (where moderators are paid a living wage, maybe in worker owned coops even, as opposed to big social media companies using basically sweatshop moderation labor)

This is *exactly* as I imagined, and provides the most straightforward explanation for anyone still trying to grasp at complicated theories on how the "SpaceX genius" could possibly be so bad at this. tumblr.com/numberonecatwinner/

Right now, someone at Google is looking at Mastodon, thinking, "mmm, this could be a chat app...".

I just deleted my twitter account. I actually feel sad about it. It used to be this amazing hive mind where I could learn or laugh at any interaction, but I can't stand seeing it becoming the platform of cyberbullies.

At the same time, I have never been this hopeful about the fediverse. I have been here for years, and it feels all the twitter magic is pouring here all of a sudden.

also the admins of birdsite and zucksite could read your DMs too so why is this even an issue you care about now

This seems like an appropriate first comic for mastodon.

What's missing from these pictures?

No on-street parking makes all the difference in the cities of #Japan. The 1962 "proof-of-parking" law means you buy a car, you've got to show you've got a place—off public streets—to warehouse it.

Reason No. 2342 Mastodon is awesome: @nova is hosting a mastodon instance with 20k active users from the rack behind her in her tech show (see clips.twitch.tv/PerfectCovertG ). Simply seeing that knowledge of how things work being shared brings me joy!

Matthew Inman is awesome. (I don't think he's on the Fediverse, but theoatmeal.com if by some weird fluke you're not familiar with his work.)

lmao people are tweeting out entire movies because the Genius CEO’s microservice purge took out the copyright monitoring service twitter.com/AsleepMods/status/

Believe me, as the Fediverse's network effect grows, it will be seen as a go-to alternative whenever Big Social screws over their userbase.

This wasn't a concern for them one month ago, but it's a concern now.

Today, 2022-11-18, we are seeing a sustained 10,000 new accounts *per hour* across almost 1,700 active #Mastodon instances. That’s 5 times more per hour than in the week before. More than 7,000,000 accounts in total on active instances. These are truly fascinating numbers.
