So I spent the whole day optimizing bird.makeup and got about a 5x in performance. Things are starting to run better, seems we are iterating on all accounts within 4-5 hours right now. I have other ideas that will probably get another 3x that I want to implement tonight, so performance should be right on target.

Until more people sign up of course! 🙃

Over many years, I have been gradually replacing all of the paragraphs in the Ship of Theseus Wikipedia article.

Due to the high cost of the American healthcare system, ChatGPT is now my primary care physician.

The best way to stay healthy – and to stay in the game – is to keep your COVID-19 vaccinations up to date. If you’re due for one of your shots, click here and find where and when you can get it: bit.ly/3GbBbN5

One question I get asked a lot about bird.makeup is: How fast is federation (time between tweet posted and on your fediverse timeline)? And how fast will it be in the future?

So we did fall to days with the influx of new users, which is unusable. I'm working on a few simple changes to bring in down to hours, and in the long term I want to bring in down to less than a single hour. It will never be realtime though, due to how I fetch tweets.

It's okay to tell your family you don't understand how their TV apps work either (even if you do).

Capping tech support is self care

So I've spent the day optimizing bird.makeup/ , should be faster now! Well at least for a few days at the rate at which people are signing up 🙃

Looks like mastodon.social has blocked bird.makeup (I don't disagree with that decision btw). If you want to continue using that service you will have to move servers, unfortunately...

Y'all are signing up for bird.makeup/ faster than I can make it scale 🤯

Normaly I would be on top of this, but it is Christmas, so it's going to take a few days for the sync to be back to normal...

Here's a neat interview with @blaine about Mastodon and how Fission is working to bring IPFS to the Fediverse. thenewstack.io/why-a-twitter-f

One of the things I would miss here on Mastodon was all of the alerts from my local infrastructure and government twitter accounts. These will likely take a very long time to make the migration.

With bird.makeup, you can create bot accounts that put those tweets in your Mastodon timeline. For instance, I follow the Washington State Patrol account for regional weather related road closures and accident reports:

Today’s social media status quo isn’t cutting it, so Mozilla is exploring an alternative here on Mastodon. In early 2023, Mozilla will be testing a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social. We will keep you updated, but for now learn more here: mzl.la/3BNXQMQ

“Interesting. Suggest that maybe we might still have an itsy bitsy bot problem on Twitter …”
