@d @terryenglish @chjara wealthy oligarchs swooped in and bought all state assets after they were privatised along with other things
@terryenglish @chjara @d that’s why just changing policies alone is no and you need a complete overhaul of the governance system to mute the impact of wealth on elections and provide an environment in which multiple actors can compete to form the government or just be lucky and have a benevolent dictator

@overflow I suppose I would take exception to the idea that a less regulated economy leads to better living standards if that's what you're saying here. Often times the opposite happens like in South America and the former Soviet Union. I will agree however, that it depends on the circumstances of what actions are being taken by the government in an economy. I will also agree that the UN has many, many problems. @chjara@mk.absturztau.be @d

@terryenglish @d @chjara it depends on what the government doing deregulation is aiming for is it removing environmental regulation because big oil is lobbying for it or is it removing unfair advantages granted to state owned enterprises. I don’t think any sensible person would say that there’s no corruption in market systems but if you look at countries with freer economies they have citizens with much better living conditions.The UN is a really terrible organisation reforming it to be functional would take god knows how long and it would take probably centuries for it to gain all the trust it has lost to people who think we need it never mind the people who aren’t sympathetic to organisations like it.

@d

As for global governance, it's clear that some form is necessary to address present problems and future ones that affect the whole world. Just take the COVID-19 crisis as an example. If we had a global plan in place to vaccinate all in the world, we would not be dealing with these variants as we are now as countries have pursued their own agendas. @chjara@mk.absturztau.be

@d "no guarantee that the regulation is good though, they rarely are" Citation needed. I'm going to just disregard your mealymouthed assertion that these systems are corrupted due to regional divisions(?) because you don't appear to be making a point.

@chjara@mk.absturztau.be

@d "Deregulation is usually the only way to make good money". Sounds quite dumb. Good regulations that benefit everyone is better than light touch or no regulation. "UN is corrupt" Oh right I forgot that there's no corruption in market systems, especially unregulated ones. @chjara@mk.absturztau.be

@chjara@mk.absturztau.be The wealthy will always try to find ways to horde for themselves at the expense of the rest of society. We desperately need some kind of international governance to curb the power of international capital. I remember reading that there were preliminary talks to have a global minimum corporate tax. Ironically it seems to be coming from the G-20 and not the UN.
