И назвать её «Вкусно и точка»? 😏
@DotardTed
Here people live in these ugly concrete boxes and mostly hate each other, sometimes they don't even know their neighbours' faces, but want the worst for them 😅
Despite some family issues I think I've had a good upbringing and it's not that bad for me, but I'm still sometimes ashamed of myself that I don't do more to keep my family together, to care for my neighbourhood… And the state of course supports that on purpose because separate we are weak 😩

It is certainly true outside of big cities, in the cities it's the same as in the West — atomized society, broken social ties, and it's getting worse.
A friend of mine got married and moved to Spain several years ago and she was amazed how strong the family ties are — they get together a lot and care for each other. I told her that it's actually the same in Russia, it's just that we grew up in Moscow so we rarely see that.

I can't say anything about the 🇺🇦 part of the story as I'm not too well versed, but I agree that this schism was a good idea, considering how Kremlin managed to turn Church into a tool of political oppression and crowd-control.
The law "against desecration" and how it was used in later years (in a secular country😏) is a disaster and the fact that it was supported by the Church is a stain that would be hard to wash off, not that someone's currently trying.

Yeah, same here. I have nothing against true believers, but most people just follow some rituals blindly without adhering to core Christian values, priests in most cases can't offer any spiritual guidance. With a few exceptions it all looks like a facade.
And given the history of organization I have little trust in it.

@enigmatico Still not enough cats! 😸
@demitasse
To be fair some of those who are into Russian Orthodox Church are good Christians — both the priests and the parishioners, but it's far from being mainstream.
My aunt turned overly religious in the recent years, being atheist all her life. And I seriously doubt that she had an epiphany all of a sudden and found Christ, most likely it's the same kind of brainwashing as with state-run TV propaganda.

After desolution of Rus. Empire and decades of Soviet crackdown on it, it was revived by Stalin to incite patriotism during WW2 — and this is what we still have today.
And yes, Russians are free to practice any religion they want if that is the officially approved flavour of that religion, take a look at this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_Jehovah's_Witnesses#Russia
Their legal status is extreme organization.I'm sure there are cases like that against Islam-based groups,just not that well-known

I am 🇷🇺 and I think ROC has nothing to do with Christianity, some of the "priests" have never held Bible in their hands. And it has nothing to do with religion, its a state-run org. Its influence grew together as the state transformed into authoritarian regime.
To be fair, it was like that since the tsars, when priests were to report on people if they say something wrong during confession. Converting to another religion was persecuted by law at the time.

Not only doing it, but not really hiding it, Russian Child Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova openly admitted that some children they've brought openly hated Russia and were speaking lowly of president Putin, but then "learned to love Russia" — that is a textbook definition of genocide.
As for grown-ups fleeing Russia, I can't deny that there are those who voluntarily do it, but: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/07/08/world/russia-ukraine-war-news/the-us-identified-18-russian-filtration-camps-for-ukrainians-a-diplomat-says?smid=url-share#the-us-identified-18-russian-filtration-camps-for-ukrainians-a-diplomat-says
Filtration camps! Does this look good?I don't think so

Religion, but not real faith, often becomes a weapon in political fight or in strive for staying in power. Populism is now on the rise throughout the world and politicians will always fish in these muddy waters to polarize society. The best we can do, I think, is maintaining level head and not making enemies of each other.
@alyx
I've seen this process in reverse in Russia, where the standards of living have been declining for quite a while and Orthodox Christianity is on the rise. With support from the state of course. Only a few years ago TaTu girls came out of this country, and they _were_ popular domestically, now people get arrested for shooting video, where cathedral is seen in the background — because it offends someone. That's just bullshit!
@alyx
Yeah, I think I misunderstood you, sorry. Like I said, provoking some community just for kicks is wrong, but self-censorship to keep everyone happy is wrong too, proper balance should be found. I think we agree here.
But I don't think the West should _make_ Muslims be more secular. It's a natural process that happens as standards of living rise. Radical Islam most often comes from war-torn countries where people live in poverty.
