Sometimes it's better to leave it at that. Sure vim can be turned into a full-featured IDE, but sometimes that nice file browser and tagbar, autocompletion and spellchecker just take time to load. I often start it with an empty config just to be able to move around quickly, especially if I'm over ssh.

@thor Yep, that's exactly how pity works: putting the one you express it for beneath you. It's also very exploitable by manipulative persons, so I think pity is bad.
For me this also won't work, I think we are very alike in our outlook.
But for some — it might. Not pity, but telling them nothing's wrong with them and everything is alright. Just to stop them wallowing in their dark thoughts.

They shouldn't pity you or tell you what to do, but they should support you if you want to do something yourself. Just being around is sometimes the best strategy 🤷

My friends came over to my place once, we wanted to record some music. My neighbours came in a couple of hours and asked me to keep the noise down. When I met one of them the next day I tried apologizing for playing instruments at night, but it turned out noise that disturbed them wasn't it, but the noise we made when we were cooking 🤣

@inference Of course there are zealots who can make anything absurd, but the core ideas are good. Like having headers as config files. I seldom modify config files and if I do, I can as well rebuild the thing. It may not be suitable for the ones who don't have build tools and dependencies installed, but for me it's just fine — it builds in seconds and it runs faster.

@inference I don't think it's about line count, to me it's about not making the tool that has to do one thing modular for no reason, about avoiding unnecessary abstractions. I always fall into this trap myself — making my code reusable from the very beginning, being prepared for the most rare use cases. All that makes the code hard to understand.
When I ported PAM auth patch to my xlock, after shaking cobwebs off my C skills, I looked at the source and I could tell what that code does. It's good

My instance doesn't have federated timeline or whatever they call this thing that shows you posts from people you don't explicitly follow. So searching by tags and people like you are the only means I have to encounter other people on Fedi and maybe even follow them.

Or a game! C&C came on two CDs, NOD campaign was on one CD and GDI on the other. And you could give the second CD to a friend and play multiplayer 😁
I remember, my CD drive got broken and I asked a friend of mine to give me his so I could copy the files to HDD and use CD emulator to play the game — we didn't have No-CD version.

It wasn't that hard, but it required lots of boilerplate code: creating a window, making it modal, handling the events, etc.
Making a complex GUI app with that would be a nightmare, same with Xlib. So Windows had a variety of libs to facilitate that: MS had MFC, Borland had some too for their C++ Builder — VCL, OWL? 🤔
