@PeterCxy @fribbledom I think some heavy media files are the culprit, which it has to keep cached not to decrypt them every time. According to dev menu, Element uses 1,7 Gb on my phone, I do not have a lot of chats, but I do like to paste screenshots into chats with Firefox on desktop and it pastes them as PNGs. Also not an issue for me as I have a lot of free RAM.
@fribbledom @exception Some older devices had more RAM e.g. Xiaomi MI 10 Ultra had up to 16 Gb, newer model, MI 11 Ultra only has up to 12 Gb. Looks like no one needed THAT much on a phone 🤷
@sneak BTW what is wrong with surveillance then? Let's just call it you are "being studied". No one really dies. What can go wrong?
I'm not trying to change the subject (whataboutism) I'm just trying to understand your logic. I agree that teaching as in education should not be illegal, but teaching as in helping someone commit crimes should be punishable. For me it does matter what is being taught to whom.
@sneak Well, he was restricted from teaching an (already jailed) person how to escape his jail, still did that and went to jail too. You think this is wrong, point taken.
What do you think are good reasons for going to jail? Killing someone directly most certainly is, but what about selling a gun to a person with a really bad criminal record? Not unknowingly, but running a background check on him and still going forward. Or is it just "doing business"?
@sneak How is this whataboutism? When advanced technologies come to non-free countries they are never used to make people free and comfortable, they are always used for more oppression, more surveillance, more wars, etc.
I am from Russia, I know what I am talking about. People/companies that bring them become the enablers in this case. If I was a cryptocurrency researcher I would stay out of conference like this even if it was held in China and this is North Korea for chrissake!
@sneak Teaching what, cryptocurrencies in a country where the majority of population has no access to the Internet? Do you believe this bullshit?
You seem to have no idea how stuff like this works in non-free countries. There is no way a conference like this could be organized by some random people in educational purposes, it was organized by the government and in this case to help them circumvent the international sanctions (it is hinted in the article you've posted the link to). That is wrong.
@sneak You might think US is bad and you are right, but there are other countries that are pure evil compared to US. None of the shit happening in the Ukraine right now might have happened if the US an EU sanctioned Russia earlier.
@sneak What are you talking about? This is not some random country they don't like, it's North Korea we are talking about here. AFAIK even Apple Support will tell you to go fuck yourself if you tell them you are from North Korea, what is wrong with that?
Besides, he was denied the permission to go there and decided to go anyway so he was well aware what he was doing.
@Tutanota Element/Matrix. Everything that uses your phone number is useless IMO. Because if it can be traced back to you no double ratchet will prevent FSB from putting white hot pliers into your arse so you can decrypt everything for them.
@sneak @purism USB-C chargers are also supported, so they told: https://puri.sm/posts/librem-14-runtime-and-charging/
@sneak I get it, trustworthy ≠ secure. I believe it's a matter of approach in general: less attention to detail = more bugs and inconsistencies. It's all the same in the hardware dept. I had a late 2011 17" MBP, this model came out with faulty GPUs. Apple refused to even acknowledge the problem first, but announced replacement program for this model in 2014 — in three years. Apple is hit or miss nowadays. I respect you having your own opinion though, I don't insist on mine.
@sneak Trustworthy? When 10.13 came out it permitted root login without password: https://twitter.com/lemiorhan/status/935581020774117381
Man, they've even released the CPU which allows interprocess data exchange, bypassing all the sandboxes.
UI design aside, software-wise Apple's been steadily rolling downhill at least since 10.4
@sneak No, it doesn't make it easy at all. You can launch the archival process, but it doesn't let you actually download anything until you enter a phone number so it can send you a confirmation code. With no phone number tied to the account I can't imagine how this improves security, you can enter any phone number. I've ended up downloading everything with fetchmail and deleted the account afterwards. Oddly enough no confirmation is required in this case.
@BereanBitcoiner @PublicNuisance@fosstodon.org Step in the right direction is going decentralized, so, in case your current provider loses trust, you can save your contacts, chat histories and wave them goodbye. That is the big pro of Matrix. Signal is a protocol too, but app and company first, if tomorrow Signal the company leaking info hits the news, normie norm is kinda lost: either he has to live with it, or learn something completely new again.
@Gina WinGet is MS take on package management, it's pretty handy, you can install familiar tools e.g. vim, go, python etc. with it and even get rid of Microsoft Chrome — widgets and some other stuff might not work without it though. It gets really minimalistic and nice this way.
@Gina You can get rid of almost everything but Xbox Game Bar using PowerShell with "Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName <Name>" Use "Get-ProvisionedAppxPackage -Online" to get a list of names of installed packages. This way they do not get re-installed even for new users.
@Gina Sounds a bit like a lighthearted version of Okkupert, which although doesn't have an all-female cast, definitely has strong female characters.
@mz Wow! This looks really nice! IMO proper tiled WM should work way better on a smartphone than all those "mobile" shells. Assign each app you use frequently its own workspace — and you're all done. Good on-screen keyboard is a must though!

Just in case: DMs/PMs simply don't exist on this instance as concept — don't use them, use the other instance if you absolutely have to, or send an email to any address at m0xEE.Net or .Com or .Org, but I prefer keep most communication public.
