They were originally a thing for hosting providers to reduce costs and provide their customers with *some* isolation, how they have made it into a thing used by people who self-host is beyond me 🤷

Yeah, I have just read that up. Little weird to me as phobia doesn't mean you are scared of something as in scary movies, it most often means not wanting to be around something, not being comfortable with it. Certain type of people in this case.
But if you want these people around, but still want to mistreat them, there is a way more concerning underlying problem than if it was a phobia 😅

Exactly! It's not always about feeling important (I think often the opposite is the case TBH), it's about not doing things that are uncomfortable to you. I am paranoid and when I see follow request from someone I have never interacted with and who has very few public posts, it feels suspicious to me. Sometimes I accept such follow request in a month when I see this person communicating with someone else — at least now I know it's a real person 🤷

The problem with this approach is usually this: you either treat your readers as the one who pays your bills or as cattle to show ads to, I'm not sure about NYT, but a lot of media outlets try to do both to make subscription affordable. Being the source of income AND the product they sell to their other customers at the same time makes you wonder — whether you should really trust them, maybe they are both bullshitting you and taking your money 🤔

@mjdxp Getting rid of Win32 software completely might have also been a good thing — the idea of running same apps on desktop, mobile, Xbox, etc wasn't bad at all. But of course the were indecisive and eventually killed off first their mobile platform and later UWP apps on others. And they have tried to "fix" the store which turned it into a complete clusterfuck, now it's a collection of poorly maintained UWP apps, ugly-looking Win32 ones and web apps that work in MS Chrome — worst of all worlds.
