@randahl Actually, it's what most sane Russians fear — that it would go back to normal as soon as they strike up some new "peace plan". I was expecting at least what we have now sanction-wise well in 2015, so this state would crash and burn with no economy to wage any international offensives, but no — European leaders were so full of shit that it went back to business as usual in just a couple of years 😩

@kev
Oh, I see, so it's about the hypothetical situation when buyout happens and new owner decides to defederate…
It might seem that such a decision is a no brainer, obvious choice, but… it's not!
Defederation is not a one-way thing, not only those outside lose connections to those inside, it's the other way around too.
And those on .social might migrate not out of principle, but because most of people they had followed aren't there anymore.

@coolboymew When you had a normal avatar image, but then everyone just started using round ones and you had to adapt.

@neural_meduza Голубь мира! Make love, not war…
На деле обычное орнитоложество 😤

@Homebrewandhacking Sorry for using my other account to reply, but I really don't like it when I have to split my reply into five parts when it gets long and 500 characters is the limit I have on Librem Social instance.

@profoundlynerdy I use a combination of them. I have a computer at home that is online and is on 24/7, it has fetchmail running that retrieves mail from for all my accounts. Most of the time I just ssh there and use mutt.
However on my laptops I'd like to have some offline access so I use Thunderbird that retrieves emails and stores them locally.
I don't like Thunderbird for being resource-hungry so I'd like to get rid of that, I should probably sync the mail dir from that computer and use mutt.

@gordoooo_z Oh, you tell me! You probably don't realize how much I hate Google, the only Google thing I find acceptable is Go — because I really-really-really like what Pike did, and they are trying to ruin even that now.
I was very reluctant to use Android and I got this phone mainly to experiment with it and I already knew I would be able to run other mobile OSes: it supports Sailfish, Ubuntu Touch and mobile Debian on top of Halium compatibility layer called Droidian, this made me feel safer😅

@gordoooo_z I do have a fake "Play Services" to use patched GCam, but it doesn't drain battery and doesn't access network. Almost every app I use supports Unified Push (Tusky for Fedi and Schildi, patched Element, for Matrix), the only app I don't get notifications from, I think, is ProtonMail, but I do check my mail now and then anyway so it's not a problem.
For others that might be a problem, but I did keep using my Lumia till its last breath so everyone knows that I just have no apps 😂

@gordoooo_z Yeah. I got myself a Chinese phone with OS by Google, all while living in Russia, and I'm very paranoid, so the first thing I did was replace the ROM with a more trustworthy one 😅
I didn't even use this phone until I was able to unlock the bootloader and I had to wait for a week to do this (Xiaomi moment😩)
I mostly use apps from F-Droid and Aurora for the few apps I might want from Play store. And Ntfy for notifications.

@Homebrewandhacking
I don't even think that such buyout is reasonable. Had someone done something similar to what Musk does to Twitter to any particular Fedi instance, people'd be out of the door in a matter of week if not less.
On the other hand, picking your Fedi instance when you don't even know what Fedi is VERY confusing — what I did is went with the first one run by the company I trusted and I still like it although I started hosting my own one since then🤷
@folkerschamel @seth @feditips

@Homebrewandhacking
But won't the federated nature make it even easier to migrate elsewhere in case of Musk-like buyout? It made people come here from Twitter in waves and this time they have to learn how to use new software, have to pick an instance, have no way to keep their followers… In case mastodon.social get new admins, people should already know other instances they like, and they can keep their social connections.

@gordoooo_z I started using it some time around version 4 (demo of it came with a lot of MIDI controllers at the time) and very soon it became my main tool of trade. Although I do think that they've made UI worse since version 8 (which was somewhat slow, but otherwise perfect), they have added a lot of useful things since then, but it just made UI less consistent. I haven't upgraded to 11 yet — even with huge discounts, I have other things on my plate right now 😅

@gordoooo_z You should definitely give it a try! I think it's a great software that revolutionized DAWs as much as ProTools did in its time. Once you familiarize yourself with it, it gets really comfortable to use, every UI function is mappable to MIDI control (Cmd+M) or keyboard (Cmd+K if I recall correctly) just make a setup you feel comfortable with for your track, maybe some pre-recorded sequences, then hit record and improvise, and of course it's easy to edit and re-arrange everything later

@gordoooo_z I use ArrowOS as base ROM, which itself is mostly clean AOSP with very few useful things added. The tricky part about all these customizations is keeping things simple enough so I can keep the great battery life I have. With very few apps installed and not having Google Play services I cat get as much as five days out of it, which is excellent, so I did manage to keep a proper balance.

@gordoooo_z I do use a custom one — NeoLauncher (formerly Omega), very simplistic, but allows for some customization — mainly removing things I don't need, like captions, what's the point of having huge icons if apps are still captioned, right? 😅
It's Android System UI that I was worried about — they have made everything so round in the pull-down thing that it looked like a knockoff Simple Dimple toy, I did end up with some roundness, but I have toned it down and made everything more A11-like.

@gordoooo_z Yeah, I can imagine. In fact, you can achieve a similar workflow with Live — that is the way beatboxers use it I think, recording a take over the previous one, discarding it if they don't like it.
Live is really nice and fluent once your get its "philosophy" and figure out your own workflow, some use it like any other DAW and I think they are doing it wrong, of course it allows for more or less traditional workflow, but it's definitely not its main selling point.

@gordoooo_z I don't even know why I made it mostly black, this phone doesn't have an AMOLED display, it's IPS — I could as well go with gray-ish (that's the color scheme I use on my computers) and it would have been easier, but I just felt like it. On home screen the only colorful thing is background which is very minimalist and I like it this way. Last time I touched it was when I upgraded to Android 12.1 and google (expected) ruined an otherwise perfect UI so I had to do some quirks again 😩

@gordoooo_z Yup, I strive for the same kind of minimalism. My background is the same image I have as my avatar. All my computers are "branded" with it, the phone has its boot logo replaced with it, and it even has a boot animation based on it — with audio, an excerpt from my track 🤩
I only own this phone for a year and this is my first Android phone (being a huge Google-hated I've avoided it for as long as I could) so it took a lot of effort to make it bearable to look at for me 😏

@fluffykittenspambot Does this really has no image attached or is it just me? 🤔
