@gemlog@tilde.zone Sure, to each their own, but I think Thinkpads are an acquired taste actually. I would've never got one for myself had they not been corporate standard for laptops at one of the companies I worked for. It definitely wasn't love at first sight, but they eventually grew on me and I learned to appreciate a lot of what seemed like a weird design decision first. The exterior is also off-putting, although I knew a girl who thought the rubber-coated bastards of T4x era were sexy 🤭

Trackpoint is hands-down best pointing device you can get in a laptop. Once you get used to it you get much more productive with it than with trackpad. It's so good that all my Thinkpads had touchpad disabled.
Before I got my first Thinkpad I've been using IBM mouse which had it in scrolling wheel's place so it was a bit easier for me. At least I wasn't completely weirded out by this thing 😂

@gemlog@tilde.zone I just realized that buttons this laptop has are not for using with touchpad, but for trackpoint — Thinkpads had two sets of buttons for that same purpose 😅
This means that touchpad has this design with no visible keys, its whole surface is one big button — also a terrible decision. I'm using my old "Unibody" MacBookPro now — the model that pioneered this design and I hate it! Looks like most users like it though. I still have reasons to remain grumpy, but not because of buttons on top 😄

@gemlog@tilde.zone Apple I think. Having jack on the bottom side is okay — it's easier to put phone in your pocket this way I think. And it's kinda okay if your headphones have straight plug, but if it's angled like the one my Sennheiser Momentum headphones have, it feels weird and cable gets bent in unnatural way. I didn't like that change at all.

Но дела плохи — есть такое. Даже мой проводной провайдер — самый отмороженный, никогда ничего не блокировали, запретил Proton, при чём, судя по всему, целыми диапазонами по IP-адресам. Шведские сервера всё ещё доступны, но уже как-то напрягает — пора отсюда эвакуироваться.

Да у нас людям даже запрещать ничего не надо — самоцензура процветает. Я помню как производители продуктов запереживали, можно ли теперь размещать на упаковке логотип Instagram и ссылку на страницу, хотя прецедентов вообще никаких не было.
Как в том анекдоте — верёвку и мыло свои приносят и очередь в пятницу занимают, чтобы побыстрее отмучиться 😅

Do they really place keys on top edge of the trackpad these days in most laptops? When did that happen? 🤯
How do I perform dragging with one hand on that? I thought I stopped "getting it" when they placed the headphone jack on the bottom edge of smartphone, but this… I think I'm going to keep using the laptops I have now for a while…

@Uniflame It's not about gene itself only, whether it is considered an evolutionary advantage or disadvantage is also a factor. I think society isn't up to most autistic people having several kid yet, but when society adapts so it's no longer considered a disadvantage then yes, it might happen.
I believe ADHD might be considered an advantage at some poing and I think it was at certain point in the past.

Don't get me wrong, I like ThinkPads, but from business perspective it was right. That branch wasn't profitable for them and they really wanted to concentrate more on stuff like mainframes and business applications. Things were good for them even here in Russia. A couple of my friends worked for IBM and they've sold a bunch of DB2 licenses to Moscow gov't, I swear I've seen some websites still running on WebSphere in 2015! 🤪

@curiousthinker My T43 is still good. Has its uses with TUI apps like tut and gomuks. But you're right, it's underpowered to open today's web sites in Firefox. It does fine with two tabs, but anything above that is unusable. The web is a disaster 😩

@james@mstdn.starnix.network They are! IBM sold off that branch of their business some time around 2005. I remember this transition quite well: how ugly X60s and T60s were compared to their predecessors. I remember quality contol declining, when three laptops from same batch all had different chargers… Who could've known that things could get even worse than that 🤣
