Oh, it's not that bad. XMPP was the same in mid 2000s, it was based on controversial XML, ejabberd was hardly considered lightweight at the time, one of the most popular clients — Gajim was in python, and we didn't have the luxury of modern performant multicore CPUs. I'm not gonna preach, but give it time, it'll get better!
But yeah, gomuks is cool! It doesn't do voice calls and all that, but otherwise perfectly functional.

Nah, it's just as good. But it works for free accounts (I haven't checked as it's not relevant for me, but I think it does) and you can build it using gcc-go so it runs on platforms where reference go implementation is not an option.
Well, it does break from time to time when Proton deprecates old APIs, but not too often. It mostly works.

Patches are okay. They did a lot to improve software that was already there, I admit that. But having Google at the helm is worst possible thing. I like go for example, but:

@mwt Yep, it's a pretty good alternative if you are too lazy to self host (like me). Like I said in other comment, I don't use web interface and mostly use hyrdoxide or protonmail-bridge to access it, but I like it in every possible way.
They get a lot of hate for giving info on some activist to the police, but they only disclosed his IP-address per Swiss law and that guy didn't even use VPN. I don't know, it doesn't seem THAT bad to me 🤷

My e-mail client is ssh to mutt on a computer that runs fetchmail, procmail and hydroxide (to access ProtonMail in sane way).
Maybe I should get rid of this shit and just self host — I don't know, I'm too lazy for that.
I'm cautious not to step on that slippery slope because I know it'll get down to hosting my Matrix server and Mastodon instance 😅
