San Francisco Police used a rape survivor's own DNA—collected years earlier while investigating her sexual assault—to charge her for an unrelated property crime. They’re not the only agency searching innocent people’s DNA. eff.org/deeplinks/2022/02/not-

I knew software development ageism ran rampant over 50+ workers, but IBM seems to have set a new low bar of 40+.

In my view, companies that practice ageism are looking for followers, not leaders. You must have a type A personality to drive yourself into a leadership position; merit isn't considered.

Leadership should be based on merit, and merit can require time to establish; this runs counter to ageism. Leadership also doesn't mean management. i.e., lead by example.

It wouldn't be a stretch to call this creeping incursion from the "Frightful Five" around the world a new digital colonialism, because it's not really competition. They can afford to loss-lead any indigenous competitors to death. This is about each of these mega corps trying to be winner-take-all with their own predatory, proprietary 'cloud' monoculture.

Very interesting read:

"Decentralization wasn't always a crypto buzzword, a blockchain is just a spicy database that enables decentralization but does not guarantee it. We need to understand how decisions are made and where power is prone to clustering."

Dymo's desktop label-makers enjoyed a boom during lockdown, thanks to the shift to e-commerce and the demand for shipping labels. But that windfall wasn't enough for the company. They just released two new models, the 550 and the 5XL, whose DRM prevents you from using third-party labels:

Third-party labels for desktop label-makers are ubiquitous. Different manufacturers produce them, differentiating on materials, size, and adhesive. Oh, and price, naturally.

Sometimes meritocracy seems to be a word used to block new people and ideas from entering a closed circle.

That's an important challenge, because McKinsey's business relies on fielding plausible experts that will maintain its role as consigliere to 90 of the 100 largest businesses in the world. But McKinsey itself is such a force for ill that it keeps losing top personnel. Some - like Anand Giridharadas, go on to write bestsellers that eviscerate its claims to virtue:

Attention all media uploaders! Please caption your images and video so that everyone, not just the sighted, can appreciate, boost and reply to your brilliant memes and funny fails.

We've added a couple of themes to Ecko that highlight undescribed media but one wonders if more can be done.

In discussions around Media Upload in ActivityPub mention is made of a summary but it is non-normative. So would it make sense to formalize the handling of captions and text descriptions? Can a protocol extension or document help the fedi become more accessible at network level?

Suddenly, their closed source bionic eye implants lost their updates.

Their implants: now "obsolete, and unsupported".

The employees were laid off.

What happens to the patients when software upgrades are gone?

"The #SEO marketers gaming their way to the top of every Google search result might as well be robots. Everything is commercialized. Someone’s always trying to sell you something. Whether they’re a bot or human, they are decidedly fake."
