So I've been working on this draft for some time; this weekend I finally got into into publishable shape. If the trope that every equation in a book or article halves your readership is correct, I would assume that about 0.2 people will read this. 😀

Everyone in software has their ignorances; Capers Jones wrote, "design methods such as the unified modeling language (UML)". UML was birthed by (OO) analysis and design methods, but it is not a design method. The Three Amigos created RUP as their unified method.
I've seen him refer to Object Oriented (OO) as a method as well. Of course to be fair, I've also seen other people spout this ignorance of OO and UML. OO usually refers to a set of anecdotal rules that users of OOPLs follow.

Capers Jones has commented on bad news project deliverables not reaching upper management. He appears to think the fix to this problem is better use of tracking tools. When you combine this with the DeMarco and Lister books, like Peopleware, you realize all kinds of dystopian software metrics scenarios. This is one of the roots of developer angst over software metrics collection.

"Chapter 7: Advancing Software from a Craft to a Profession" ... love that title.

TIL that the word "robot" derives from the Czech word "robota."

"Robota," is Czech for "corvee," i.e. the labor that feudal peasants were required to provide to the sovereign or lord in feudal Europe.

The word "robot" was introduced to English via the 1920 sci-fi play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) by Czech writer Karel Čapek. In the play, a factory creates artificial people who at first are happy to serve humans, but eventually revolt and kill everyone...but also learn how to love. 🤯

The data indicates that Agile projects aren't scalable and produce lesser quality than PSP, TSP, or RUP projects. This means that software quality has probably declined over the last 15 - 20 years.

For some good news, open source software does fall into the upper half of the quality levels; open source is more quality driven than (e.g.) financial software.

Capers Jones is proposing an overhaul of software education and oversight similar to what occured in medicine. He makes a strong case that is more realistic than the "just throw more programmers at it" proposals that are popular in the software industry.
