The reason I'm opposed to having the Federal gov't regulate crypto is that you will simply normalize criminal behavior, which needs to be stopped, not regulated. Which is to say I'm against the Feds regulating crypto for the same reason I'm against them regulating Ponzi schemes.

And guess what? It's already happening. Front-running trades is now a protected activity I guess, rather than a financial crime? Cool, cool...

Save us from those who believe that programmers exist to serve format and capitalization conventions instead of the other way around.

Thank you for sharing this. This article seems really important. I'm not Jewish, and I'd be interested in hearing more reactions from people who are...

Quote from article:
"The new antisemitism law would in effect silence vast swaths of Jews within educational institutions. It would in some ways be the most punitive law against Jews to be enacted in the U.S. since the Immigration Act of 1924."

"There is no other definition of bigotry in the world that equates criticism of a state, even harsh and unfair criticism, with discrimination or bigotry against the state’s people. If one claimed that denunciations of the violent foundations of the Russian empire are 'anti-Slavic'[...] we would immediately see through that as just an instrumentalist defense of Russian state interests."

Fascinating... just saw an ad on Facebook that Thrifty (car rentals) have gone 100% EV... I wonder what they know that the rest of the population don't...

Being able to remotely lock a phone you don't have credentials for using just a phone number? What could possibly go wrong?

As CNN documents, it was outsiders who caused the violence at UCLA, not the students. And it's vital to keep in mind that the police "stood by for hours" -- watching (obviously pleased) as the outsiders beat up protestors and journalists -- and thereby became collaborators with the violent intruders into a peaceful protest.

Right-wing Australian billionaire and money-bag climate change denier Gina Reinhart apparently doesn't want people to see her portrait by the Indigenous artist Vincent Namatjira in the National Gallery.

So it would be *just awful* if people share this article and her portrait.

Personally, I think it's great - and might make a very attractive t-shirt?

if I could make my SF neighbors understand two things about politics:
1. there's a direct line from the defunding of social programs (SF food bank, etc) to the crime (car break-ins) you're worried about. it sucks i'm sorry if it happened to you but people are trying to survive
2. more police & surveillance won't do much for that but WILL 100% be used to repress protest when Trump/SCOTUS make abortion, same-sex marriage, and being trans illegal

Turns out the stupid walking boot I got at an urgent care place did not cost the $300 that I forecast but, in fact, $743. This boot retails for $65.

American healthcare is just one scam after another.

Think I finally figured out why the (imnsho) execrable word "learnings" has all but replaced the actual English word "lessons" among a certain set of people*. MBAs just gotta ruin everything, I guess.

I'm a bit dubious about comparisons between generative AI and artistic sampling or collage.

Typically in artistic sampling or collage the purpose is not to obscure the fact that the work is derivative.

Just set up a self-hosted instance of FormBricks (formbricks.com) as a Google Forms alternative, to have a look... so far so good... but they're trying to sell a 'premium' version even on the self-hosted instance, and that doesn't sit well with me... Another option is LiberaForms - liberaforms.org/en Might try it, too, before committing to anything.

There's also mention of a per kWh battery price of about US$56... that means a generous home battery of, say, 15kWh could end up around US$1000... putting it well within the range of many people... - that's only 5-7 months' electricity bills for many households here in NZ...

Blimey - according to this: thedriven.io/2024/01/25/worlds the world's largest battery manufacturer, China's CATL will be halving the price of its Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries this year. "This means the price of an average 60 kWh battery pack will have dropped from $US6,776.00 to just $3,388.00 in just 12 months, saving EV manufacturers over $3,000 per vehicle." For the record, our BEV (MG4 Excite) has a 51kWh pack... So we could replace a future failed pack for under US$3k... #BEV #BatteryTech
