Although listening to Hayden Donnell on Midweek Mediawatch trying to explain the problems with social media as a general problem of under-moderation of the net, rather than one specific to zero-conscience corporate ownership and ad-driven datafarming business models, I can't help but think the journalists will be the last to get it ;)

The problem with letting strangers put things into your computer, is, you're letting strangers put things into your computer.

I don't know if we'll ever figure out how to do this in a way that doesn't end in tears.

A patch has been deployed on top of Mastodon v3.5.1 that should resolve this bug.

PSA: To everyone who is #NewHere, and those who are not.

When you use hashtags it can help those using a #ScreenReader to use #CamelCase. Screen-readers can then find and pronounce the constituent words, rather than trying to pronounce the whole thing.

It's not essential, but it's one way we can make the Fediverse more welcoming.

I don't really understand this or why they don't call it a new battery technology. It sounds amazing, but also like one of those amazing post-carbon technologies you never hear about again after reading the article (which leaves me unsure if it's because of patents, lack of market interest, or the tech was overhyped).

Anyway, perhaps someone else knows.

TIL that linktr.ee pages, which exist to serve a *list of links,* something websites in 1995 could do, does not load at all without JS enabled.

Does anyone else find it outrageous that U.N. agencies keep removing RSS feeds for their updates while prominently featuring Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube accounts on their websites? Our taxes fund these entities. We deserve open access to the content they produce.

Much of the independent web relies on Patreon to organize financial support.

The good folks at @comradery are building an ethical alternative as a co-op.

One of their rules is "no bosses, no cops". It's not meant for businesses (even nonprofits like the one I work for) but for independent creators, workers, activists, and co-ops.

If that could be a good fit for anything you our your friends are doing, maybe give them a follow here to stay updated as they're building the platform!

"There is just one significant flaw in the tragedy [of the commons] parable. It does not accurately describe a commons. Hardin's fictional scenario sets forth a system that has no boundaries around the pasture, no rules for managing it, no punishments for overuse and no distinct community of users. But that is not a commons. ... A commons requires that there be a community willing to act as a conscientious steward of a resource"

👴 OK kids...

Before #Mastodon, before #socialMedia, before the #Web, we had the #BBS.

If you wanna learn from those who came before, here's a comprehensive 5-hour #documentary about bulletin board systems. 🤓

(Of course, given the world back then it's mostly 5 hours of old white guys. So it goes!)
