@lightweight @bigblen It'd be nice to see a greed index rating applied to politicians and distributed as voter education. The index could be wealth accumulation vs societal good, and it would be based upon personal wealth, voting records, time spent volunteering, social giving, social cost of actions, etc. There's probably enough information on line to construct such a measure.

There needs to be some kind of personal happiness weighting to allow for leisure.

Thanks to @bigblen for pointing me at theregister.com/2021/09/13/eu_ - gee, wonder if NZ gov't could learn anything from these recommendations? On the plus side, we have a much smaller ship to turn around... On the negative... we haven't got a single IT-savvy politician (and only the most sporadic evidence of any savvy policy makers or advisers).

People subtracted on adding machines w/ a neat trick: the complements method. Convert a number to its complement, add it, and discard the extra "1" on the left. Many calculators with subtraction functions use this method under the hood: mathsisfun.com/numbers/subtrac

@lightweight @jgoerzen Would be good evidence if the DOJ ever initiated an antitrust investigation.

#Facebook has reversed its systemic ban of mentions of #Mastodon. Good.

There is a debate over whether or not this #censorship was intentional. I believe it was. Whether a human specifically added joinmastodon.org to a blacklist or not, they have made quite deliberate decisions about their algorithm that serve their greed for engagement first, and the resulting low-quality dangerous information on FB is entirely predictable. I'm not an audio book guy (with the exception of the occasional librevox recording), so I had no idea that Amazon owns Audible. And I had no idea how frickin' terrible they are for authors.

I just had to break it to one of my consulting clients - who requested me to take part in a meeting with their staff and other consultants - that I don't use MS Teams. Or any other MS software. It's (my) company policy. I provided them with a link to one of the BigBlueButton instances I run onshore in Aotearoa instead. Which'll be better in every way in any case.
