Small acts when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world! What do you think?🌎

Governments claiming the authority to *freeze people's bank accounts* because they want to crush a protest movement is tyrannical and obscene. If you would oppose China or Russia doing it, you must oppose Canada doing it.

Very glad @CanCivLib exists.

If you make original video content and want to put it on the Fediverse, you could try contacting the admins (via the About page) of these instances to see if they have space for you:

spectra.video
diode.zone
share.tube
tube.tchncs.de
tilvids.com
video-cave-v2.de (in German)

Alternatively, you could set up your own PeerTube instance. The easiest way to do this is through a managed hosting service such as:

federation.spacebear.ee/softwa

or

cloud68.co/instances/peertube

How much of the technology that you own is actually under your control? Asks @kyle in his new thought provoking piece. puri.sm/posts/you-should-be-in

The Small Web isn’t about going back to the days of GeoCities. It’s about going forward differently, using modern tech in a non-colonial manner.

It’s not about building clones of Twitter, YouTube, etc. There’s no way anyone can self-host a dozen different services. Instead, it’s about having a single-tenant place on the Web that you own and control without technical knowhow; a place you can add Twitter, YouTube, etc., *features* to.

If you just want to post long text articles on the Fediverse, a good option is @writefreely which has an official website at:

writefreely.org

It features a minimalist interface to avoid distracting from the text itself, and is sort of like a Fediverse alternative to Medium.

Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow WriteFreely accounts from Mastodon etc.

You can find sites to sign up on at:

writefreely.org/instances

It works entirely through your web browser, or you can use an app from writefreely.org/apps

You can also create your own instance without technical knowledge through a managed hosting service such writefreely.host or cloud68.co/instances.html

The best place to watch and share videos on the Fediverse is @peertube

You can find out more including places to sign up at:

joinpeertube.org

Just like the rest of the Fediverse, PeerTube uses ActivityPub protocols, so you can follow and interact with PeerTube from Mastodon etc.

For example, you could follow @craftykat or @chriswere or @mrfunkedude and interact with their videos entirely from within Mastodon.

Good instances to explore include:

tilvids.com
share.tube
greatview.video
vidcommons.org
diode.zone
tube.tchncs.de
video.blender.org
media.privacyinternational.org
conf.tube
video-cave-v2.de

You can create your own PeerTube site without tech knowledge through managed hosting services like federation.spacebear.ee and cloud68.co/instances.html

There's a dedicated free open source PeerTube app called TubeLab available through @fdroidorg and Google Play.

If you love books, the best part of the Fediverse is probably @bookwyrm, a GoodReads-style social reading network.

More info and sites to sign up on are at:

joinbookwyrm.com

Because it uses the same ActivityPub protocol that powers the rest of the Fediverse, you can follow BookWyrm accounts from Mastodon etc.

For example, the lead developer of BookWyrm has an account at @mouse

Yes, circumlunar.space seems to be back up :-)

I'm glad there is a full backup for the mailing list. I had noticed that the mailing list had "gone quiet" is few days ago.

@nytpu Earlier today I saw on gemini://gemini.circumlunar.space/ that there was a hardware problem with the mailing list... I don't remember the exact message, but it sounded like it would be brought back up.

Now gemini.circumlunar.space is also down, both the http and gemini versions. So I don't know what that means.
