Apparently the #Gemini mailing list (and a bunch of other stuff) is offline, maybe permanently

@nytpu Earlier today I saw on gemini://gemini.circumlunar.space/ that there was a hardware problem with the mailing list... I don't remember the exact message, but it sounded like it would be brought back up.

Now gemini.circumlunar.space is also down, both the http and gemini versions. So I don't know what that means.

@leetaur
Hmm, gemini.circumlunar.space looks up to me right now. To clarify, the Gemini mailing list was hosted by Orbitalfox over at orbitalfox.eu while the Gemini site is hosted by Solderpunk themselves at circumlunar.space. According to Orbitalfox's website they had a hard drive failure on their server where they might not be able to recover most of the data.

Luckily me and a few other people put together a full archive of the mailing list that could be trivially imported into whatever new mailing list server they get set up, if any: gemini://alexschroeder.ch/page/2021-12-31_Gemini_Mailing_List_Archive

Yes, circumlunar.space seems to be back up :-)

I'm glad there is a full backup for the mailing list. I had noticed that the mailing list had "gone quiet" is few days ago.

@nytpu @leetaur

There was a talk about setting a new mailing server over at xmpp gemini channel. Also orbitalfox did left it open if it comes back online.

There was even the talk of a usenet gemini forum. I dont now how popular that would be though.
