A very important tip before you start following people on Mastodon #TwitterMigration
Setup your profile first - have some bio, and if possible a profile picture too (though absolutely optional). Write an #introduction post and pin it to your profile.
Of course, there is no right way to participate in any community. However, setting up your profile just helps others know you better before they decide to follow you back.
Getting started with Mastodon 🌤️
Find people:
https://fedi.directory/
https://fediverse.info/explore/people
1. Boost good posts to your followers
2. Search hashtags to find stuff that interest you
3. If you're never posting anything people won't find and follow you
4. Add a profile image to make life more colorful
5. Generate an invite link and send it to your friends
6. Ask questions
#introduction #twittermigration Hi, all! I'm Joe Kaufeld: python developer, woodworker, and 3d printing weirdo. I run https://filamentcolors.xyz and am looking forward to learning more about Mastodon!
😍Hi everyone!😍
⚙️I'm an open source #rstats user migrating here as part of the #TwitterMigration! I never liked Twitter so I'm glad to be here with the rest of you!
⚙️I'm into #datascience & #publichealth - hope to get those two hashtags trending.
⚙️Please follow me if you are into talking about those topics! I hope to meet with some great conversations on this platform!
Hi all -- new to Mastodon. I'm a professor who studies public health ethics, public health law, and history (19th c. Americanist).
I do policy work, teach, design programs and curricula, and work closely with students.
Otherwise: I train Brazilian jiujitsu (about 9 years), love Star Wars, Batman, and coffee. I like to bake, esp. bread.

Moved instances, so it's #introduction time once again:
I'm a #screenwriter who's written on Alias, Fringe, Hawaii Five-0 and The Blacklist, among other shows.
I ❤️ animals and have a sanctuary that rescues pigs, goats, cats, dogs and other critters.
Interested in #technology and #privacy.
Trying to suck less at #chess.
And I'm still trying to drag everyone from the hellsite over here. Happy #twittermigration everyone 🖕
Hey #newbies! Don't worry about how mastodon works. Just join and play. Don't worry about what 'instance' (server) you can swap later. Just come and chat. No algorithm, no suggested stuff, no ads, just us!
Toot = tweet
Boost = retweet
Star = star

Added excitement, content warnings for scary shit and NSFW shit. Oh and image descriptions and the choice to hide images.

The next release of #Mastodon will be numbered 4.0 and the release candidate will be available soon.
It's nice to discover that what looked like a #bent frame is just a misaligned rear wheel.
I flipped the wheel, and the gap moved to the other side.
Then I used the string method: https://sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html
Looks even!
Adjusting spokes is lower stakes than trying to unbend the main part of the #bike.
A short writeup on how you can use the #Librem5 's #smartcard reader for single-sign-on using #Kerberos and #PKINIT. No need to save any credentials on the phone: https://honk.sigxcpu.org/con/Kerberos_authentication_on_the_Librem_5.html
there's a neat little easter egg in the latest @shiftphones SHIFT6mq bootloader which you can get from fwupd. you can enable it with "fastboot oem enable-mainline-optimization"
yes, the SHIFT6mq gets official bootloader updates on @postmarketOS!
#OpenRefine needs help to improve its #Windows and #MacOS #packaging. We want to make it easier to install the tool on those platforms. We use #Java #Maven #Launch4j and #Appbundle. Do you know someone who can help? RTs appreciated! https://openrefine.org/blog/2022/09/30/windows-macos-packaging.html

Search is effectively disabled across all of Mastodon. You can search for people and hashtags, but you cannot search content.
This was an explicit decision based on how search on other platforms has been abused to enable stalking and harassment.
It's a difficult balance, discoverability vs "protection".
There are ways to semi-circumvent it, but broadly, there is no wide-spread search for content, which is why heavy use of #hashtags is encouraged.
