Why Would Anyone Use Another Centralized Social Media Service After This? — Mike Masnick at Techdirt @mmasnick.
I’m asking myself the same question. I’m heavily active on Facebook but not looking to get involved in another proprietary social media service. techdirt.com/2022/12/21/why-wo

We worked hard to make the web "Read/Write" instead of read-only, but today, the easily "written" part is basically just text. We can do better.
Back in the 80's and 90's, ALL-IN-1, HyperCard, Visual Basic, and other systems tried to make it easy for users to compose applications from components. Later, iGoogle, MySpace, Orkut and others tried to do this for the web.

Read/Write should apply to more than text. We should be enabling end-user application composition.

Välkomna vänner!

Today, we start our journey. We take the smallest of a step, with just a second more daylight than yesterday.

The rate of daylight expansion accelerates until the vernal equinox in March. Daylight continues to be added until Midsommar.

Let’s celebrate each milestone here. Follow along and bring a friend.

If I may crowdsource, for those of you who have worked at both enterprisey corporate behemoths and (non-toxic) tech companies, what are the biggest differences you would identify between the two and from what role/perspective do you say this?

I'm going to try just posting links to posts whenever I would use a QT, like we did in the days before QTs on Twitter, in the hopes that it'll catch on as a pattern, and eventually everyone will be annoyed at having to click through to other instances in their browsers to see them, and demand they be added. fosstodon.org/@isaacs/10955520

Late night coding thoughts preparing for @SunOfStockholm:

• Temporal cannot come quickly enough to JavaScript. tc39.es/proposal-temporal/docs

• Tried to resuscitate a 2 year old, incomplete TypeScript Node.js project. Failed after half hour of trying. Got it working in under 5 minutes with Deno. Deno really is the best modern TypeScript development environment.

Anyone vilifying Mozilla gets an instant unfollow and mute. That’s some weird punching down and to the left.

someone once asked me why i was so worried about the environment

i just said "i live there"

and they looked at me as if that fact had never once occurred to them

Why do we call them “central banks” and not “apex creditors”?

Today’s social media status quo isn’t cutting it, so Mozilla is exploring an alternative here on Mastodon. In early 2023, Mozilla will be testing a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social. We will keep you updated, but for now learn more here: mzl.la/3BNXQMQ

“Capital can kill anything. So if what you have created is important, then so long as billionaires still exist, you are going to need to turn it into something that can’t be bought. An idea that can’t be killed is more valuable than an idea that can be killed, and the only thing that billions of dollars cannot kill is something that cannot have a price tag to begin with, because it exists in abundance, endlessly replicating as it spreads across the world.”

Putting ‘mastodon’ in your domain name is like naming your blog ‘WordPress’.

Mastodon is a first mover fediverse server. It will likely be eclipsed by better server implementations of ActivityPub sooner than later.

Are you sitting down? Here goes!

44% of all websites that exist right now run on WordPress.

Right now, connecting a WordPress site to the Fediverse is just a matter of installing this plug-in.

If just a fraction of WordPress sites connect to ActivityPub, then the network effect of the Fediverse will eclipse Big Social.

Carl Sagan passed away #OTD in 1996. In his final interviews he left us with two messages that are even more relevant today: one emphasizing the importance of a science literate public, the other a warning about how hard it is to extract ourselves when we’ve been conned.

#Mozilla just announced they are joining the #fediverse :fediverse:

"In early 2023, Mozilla will stand up and test a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social"

they will start with Mastodon, but are "looking forward to working on the challenges that crosscut the Fediverse"

@adamdavidson

Adam is absolutely right. Journalism needs to take ownership (finally).

Journalists need to invest in the fediverse. The fediverse will help journalists thrive, and the fediverse will thrive because of journalists.

Nobody has the luxury of waiting. Universities, brands, companies, and journalists need to move to the fediverse now. Or get in line for your AOL keyword.
