I am 100% not shitting you when I say scientists named mastodons after their teeth which they thought looked like nipples. “Mastos” as in breast. “odont” as in tooth.
We’re on a website that, in Greek, literally means “Booby Tooth.”

An irregular reminder that calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent you a GMail."

"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a better term.

Mastodon is just one of many software projects that talk to each other to create this multi-instance social network:

(kudos to @axbom for this fantastic infographic!)

There are blogs, Reddit-like communities, video instances and many more, all part of fedi.

My husband keeps knowingly putting on Spotify playlists that contain Little Drummer Boy.

I adhere to the rule that intentional plays do not count against my . Be safe out there.

They haven’t been called ‘toots’ for over a month.

You can stop calling your posts farts.

Dear gourds. Please stop.

There was once a dream of a decentralised web.

As recently as a decade ago we had a still very active blogosphere, connected via blogrolls and RSS. Specialised web forums were still mainstream and messenger apps could largely interoperate.

Centralised social media slowly ate that dream. It had plenty of positives, but it pulled more and more people away from the open web and into corporate walled gardens.

Some people kept the dream of decentralisation alive. And now you are here.

As you may recall:

• The W3C is in part hosted by MIT but MIT intends to withdraw on Dec 31.
• A new W3C nonprofit needs to take over on Jan 1.
• MIT needs to transfer assets (member dues, contracts, IP…) to the new W3C for it to operate.
• I was elected to the W3C Board and am part of the negotiations.

We're two weeks away from cutover and the negotiations are going… poorly. 🧵

Stop hating on lazy people. We didn't even do anything.

I don’t care much for Christmas movies, but…

“Spirited” (Apple TV+) was phenomenal. It’s “The Greatest Showman” meets Hallmark Channel in the best way possible.

Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer delivered outstanding performances in a comedic, musical sequel to the Charles Dickens classic.

This is the first time in ~17 yrs that the majority of the people in my network are talking to each other in public via an open protocol on community-run servers rather than a startup's service.

It's really nice to have gotten here, in a way that's entwined not only with nostalgic feelings, but also their optimistic underpinnings that were the reason I was interested in all this in the first place.

I heard there was another look-at-me antic on the old site, and it was my pleasure not to care.

Just a few more days until the glorious expansion of daylight begins.

We can do this.

Follow along, Stockholm.

All I wanna do is
[gun shot noise]
[cash register noise]
[organ noise]
[saxophone noise]
[cow noise]
[cat noise]
Fix this broken synthesizer

Some shots you can’t plan for.
I was waiting to shoot the rise of a supermoon when the clouds rolled in a ruined the spectacle. Instead of the moon crowning the tip of the Bay Bridge, a flock of pelicans passed over it, in perfect formation mimicking the shape of the bridge.

Just before the invasion, #Ukraine made a deal with #Amazon #AWS to create a data warehouse for its government information and infrastructure: tax and property records, bank statements, and the like. Things that an invaded and occupied Ukraine might lose if Russia got their hands on the only copies.

They literally snuck Pelican crates full of SSDs into the country and spirited them back offshore after backing up 10 petabytes of important historic and legal records.

This paragraph, second from the end, really put a fine point on why Amazon did this: They were not beholden to, nor being held hostage by, any Russian operations...because they never had any:

Amazon didn’t have to worry about its relationship with Russia on the Snowball project. It doesn’t have one. “We didn’t have anything to turn off there,” Maxwell said. “We had never invested there. It’s a point of principle.”

Truly an amazing story from the #LATimes.

In the renovated airport terminal 1 for the first time.

It now smartly routes people deplaning away from people queuing to board. And there are fun interwoven hamster tunnels with bouncy moving sidewalks.

However, it still did not add enough seating and standing room for a full plane to queue at the gate. Packed in like sardines coughing on each other. 😷

Welcome back to the fediverse! While you were away…
