The holidays are upon us and gatherings are happening. Here's a quick refresher on what to do if you messed up someone's pronouns.

Shameless plug for 1Password

I am once again asking you to stop using LastPass. The company has a history of security issues dating back years, and has yet to make holistic security improvements — or heck even investigate incidents properly.

Good alternatives:

- 1Password is my #1 rec, best for most use cases
- Bitwarden if you want open source
- KeePassXC if you want local vaults and open source
- I hear ok things about Dashlane but don’t know a ton

“I hope a lot that government will not only promote the encryption but will make it even more encrypted than it is now.”

Hear from people living in Ukraine, on how end-to-end encryption is vital for keeping themselves and their loved ones safe in times of war. A film by Global Encryption Coalition.

I just learned Emerson College’s tuition has risen 63% in 15 years to $52k/year and—dear gourds—why would anyone spend $200k on an undergrad degree in liberal arts??

@mfloryan I’m so glad you asked! I want to hit “Kiva bingo” by lending to every country, sector, activity, and field partner it lends to.

Quick link to see loans in countries you haven’t lent to: kiva.org/lend/countries-not-le

You can see your full stats at kiva.org/portfolio/lending-sta

And I also like to lend again to people who successfully repaid a previous loan. Kiva sends emails when that happens.

I just made my 361st loan on Kiva.

Microfinance changes lives. Lend $25 to someone who needs it. Get paid back. Lend it again.

Why Would Anyone Use Another Centralized Social Media Service After This? — Mike Masnick at Techdirt @mmasnick.
I’m asking myself the same question. I’m heavily active on Facebook but not looking to get involved in another proprietary social media service. techdirt.com/2022/12/21/why-wo

We worked hard to make the web "Read/Write" instead of read-only, but today, the easily "written" part is basically just text. We can do better.
Back in the 80's and 90's, ALL-IN-1, HyperCard, Visual Basic, and other systems tried to make it easy for users to compose applications from components. Later, iGoogle, MySpace, Orkut and others tried to do this for the web.

Read/Write should apply to more than text. We should be enabling end-user application composition.

Välkomna vänner!

Today, we start our journey. We take the smallest of a step, with just a second more daylight than yesterday.

The rate of daylight expansion accelerates until the vernal equinox in March. Daylight continues to be added until Midsommar.

Let’s celebrate each milestone here. Follow along and bring a friend.

If I may crowdsource, for those of you who have worked at both enterprisey corporate behemoths and (non-toxic) tech companies, what are the biggest differences you would identify between the two and from what role/perspective do you say this?

@tharper Disney ABC Television Group required multiple VP-level approvals to get *anything* done. VPs felt like they weren’t doing their jobs unless they tweaked something, which usually required restarting sign off with everyone. VPs knew this and would just agree with their peers unless it was a change from another VP they didn’t like. The pettiest bargaining I’ve ever witnessed. IC software engineers had to lead this sign off process due to it treating “IT” like an internal agency.

I'm going to try just posting links to posts whenever I would use a QT, like we did in the days before QTs on Twitter, in the hopes that it'll catch on as a pattern, and eventually everyone will be annoyed at having to click through to other instances in their browsers to see them, and demand they be added. fosstodon.org/@isaacs/10955520

Late night coding thoughts preparing for @SunOfStockholm:

• Temporal cannot come quickly enough to JavaScript. tc39.es/proposal-temporal/docs

• Tried to resuscitate a 2 year old, incomplete TypeScript Node.js project. Failed after half hour of trying. Got it working in under 5 minutes with Deno. Deno really is the best modern TypeScript development environment.

Anyone vilifying Mozilla gets an instant unfollow and mute. That’s some weird punching down and to the left.
