Quote:
"The Commission has been reluctant to detail the relationship between Thorn and Johansson’s cabinet under the EU’s freedom of information mechanism. [...] disclosure [...] would undermine the organisation’s commercial interest”."
So we cannot have democracy because that would hurt the "commercial interest" of those who want to sell their mass-surveillance technology to the EU.

SO good -- the best follow the money reporting on who's behind the global attack on digital privacy yet.
TLDR: it's law enforcement x AI companies posing as NGOs w a commercial interest in selling scammy mass scanning tech. Deeply cynical, deeply shady.
@jon absolutely, go ahead. Sorry for bothering you.
> welcome *technical* and NOT
> *political/ethical* answers
So you assume it is possible to separate those?
I don't think that works, technology is politics 🙂
In your question you ask what is "better", but what is meant by "better" is very political. "Better" for whom? For society, for some kind of common good, or for a certain company's business? That's political.

I mean, the EU is huge and there must normally be a procedure where experts in the field will review any proposal before it is presented. But in this case, experts have been ignored. How is that possible? All experts say it is madness.
The process of how the proposal was created is deeply flawed. That should be investigated, and it could be done by a journalist who does not need deep technical knowledge, it's a problem at another level, about how the EU works.
> but I'm logged into Twitter.
> So maybe that's the difference?
People should stop putting things on Twitter and instead publish in a way so that other people can actually read it.
On the topic itself, I think it is a very good idea to dig into where these things come from. Whose agenda is it really? I also wondered that regarding the EU "chatcontrol 2" proposal, it seems strange how something so idiotic can come as far as it has. Something is not right.
@meraord Grattis i efterskott 🙂
@jxself good luck on the trip!
I won't be able to come there myself but I'm with you in spirit 🙂

@Julia @emilymbender what those big tech companies are doing is disgusting, but I'm thinking what needs to happen is not so complicated after all: whoever makes such a system must be required to declare exactly what "training" data they use as input and if even a single one of those inputs requires attribution, like Wikipedia, then the system is obviously illegal to use.
I do realize that this is very far from what is happening now. But still. In principle the issue could be handled like that?
AI is leading to a tragedy of the commons: It is overgrazing the commons, scraping up everything it can, and is also being used to pollute the commons with untrustworthy content.
I was just sitting there minding my own business, watching the kids football game IFK Bergshamra - IF Brommapojkarna 6 earlier today, when suddenly this little fellow being landed on my knee.
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-eastlake-fnv-17.html

@bonifartius Yes!
@dn tack till Göteborg, det känns som en ljusglimt i denna annars så vansinniga värld.
I was at a ChopChop restaurant earlier this evening. One of their big screens that normally show order numbers and such things instead showed this, revealing that the restaurant uses Raspberry Pi 4 Model B for that.
For some reason seeing that made me happy, I got a feeling that there is hope, or something. 🙂
