Remember how IBM Watson, the computer that beat a human in Jeopardy!, was supposed to revolutionize medicine? Did you know it is being sold off for parts?

“If you think about it… the notion that you’re going to take an artificial intelligence tool, expose it to data on patients who were cared for on the upper east side of Manhattan, and then use that information and the insights derived from it to treat patients in China, is ridiculous.”

@Sheril Alt text: Image of hourglass:

Each grain of sand in this visualization
represents 10 million people.

[Top of hourglass] 140 million children are born every year. 14 grains of sand enter the hourglass.

You are here. These 795 grains represent the 7.95 billion people who are alive today.

[Bottom of hourglass] 60 million people die every year. 6 grains of sand pass through the hourglass.

About 109 billion people have lived and died. 10.900 grains of sand.

More new signage in the largest bike parking in the world. At the entrances it is now indicated which lane to choose for which floor and there are signs for merging traffic and the exits. And to make sure what kind of parking it is, they even painted bicycles on the floor 🤣🤣

#ScientistRebellion has published an open letter on the implausibility of maintaining average global temperatures below 1.5°C of warming given our current trajectories (heading for more than +3°C).

If this letter gathers more than 500 signatories from the scientific community, it will be "placed by Scientist Rebellion in a journal or mainstream news outlet ahead of COP27."

Help raise awareness about the gravity of the situation.

Don't just scroll on by...

Read about these shitsacks first.

These people would see me and my friends dead.

For those of you still following us, we would like to express our solidarity with #dropkiwifarms.

In 2019 they disrupted the #glimpse Matrix channel, then they targeted individual contributors, some of whom are still hiding and/or have threads on them today.

Outside of our own project, Kiwi Farms has driven their political enemies from their homes, off the Internet, and in some cases to suicide. We will all be safer when that website is finally gone.

Just had a look at and they don't even use Gitea! They use GitHub!! The screenshot on their homepage looks like GitHub with the icon switched. What's the point?

The cost of cars is very high and our governments pump billions of dollars making people buy and maintain these expensive machines.

Plese boost for reach: Why have a single person, or even a team, working on accessibility? In an organization, in a company, in a dev team, in any collective that works on software, media, books, art... Everyone should be focused on accessibility in anything they create for others. If you are, then everyone else has a better time! Maybe someone wants to read a picture, or hear a book, or relax their eyes while doing computer work. It helps *everyone* when everyone is included. #a11y

I think contemporary development culture has a CI-fetishization problem and this should be talked about a lot more.

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or just not interesting to a lot of people (at least I don't see it pop up much in my feeds for whatever reasons), but the rising amount of commit-triggered senseless cloud computation I see in recent years is really worrisome to me. I can appreciate the utility of a thoughtful automated process that thoroughly checks an entire release before it rolls out on big critical infrastructure, but what I see around me is so often overblown pseudo-testing that provisions entire serverfarms to crunch numbers for half an hour everytime any dev at an org commits as a much as a fix for a typo on some random work-in-progress branch. In the face of our existential climate emergency I can only consider this practice completely mindless, and complete madness. We can not keep doing this.
