Looks like the Windows XP source code got leaked. I can't wait to see what kind of horrible code that would never be tolerated in Open Source is lurking in the depths of that abyss.

One "rule" I've heard a few times for estimating software schedules is "take your estimate, double it, and then shift to the next unit of time". For example:

2 hours → 4 days

(I've also heard "multiply by pi" so "2 days → 6.29 weeks)

Does that rule have a name? It seems like the sort of thing that should, and that should be listed on github.com/dwmkerr/hacker-laws

The Mozilla layoff is terrible - not only for the former workers, but also the web at large.

If we are concerned about the future of a more private & secure web, without a monopoly - we might want to double-down on our support of Mozilla to ensure that more people keep their jobs.

Being vocal about the direction of #Firefox & #Mozilla to appropriate channels is surely needed - less Google & more innovation.

Let's work to oust any leadership without the vision we all need for a better web.

Mind. Blown.

I discovered #pivpn tonight, and within 15 minutes, I had a wireguard vpn using my #pihole configured and accessible from my mobile phone.

Both of these projects deserve kudos and funding. Check out #pivpn if you've ever wanted to host your own VPN.

TikTok offers 3rd parties to audit their code to quiet concerns. Auditability, not just of TikTok w/ hand-picked regulators/experts, is critical for software we rely on. For real privacy and security, you want software w/ a license. washingtonpost.com/technology/

The official PPA version of Remmina is so much better than the versions that exist in distro repositories I've tried! Like, it actually works. remmina.org/how-to-install-rem

An Invitation to Play Along:

We're currently developing a N900-style keyboard attachment for the #Pinephone. Do you think you can do better? Prove it. If you're right, your design may make it to production! 😎

We established the other day that only morons use chat services other than IRC. But, there is an interesting implication to note: this draws morons away from IRC, creating a kind of reverse eternal september. These days IRC on the whole has noticably fewer idiots on it than it used to.

I label all of my XFCE Whisker menus with "Start" on Linux. ;) It reduces cognitive load required to process goofy icons and reminds me of Windows 95. :D

I wish I could find an ethical, simple WiFi direct file sharing app that works cross-platform via a QR code.

"Mum, are there any new fairy tales?"
"Yes, many writers write fairy tales."
"No, like, stories that you tell kids to teach them not to do stupid things."
"Oh, I see. There are a few. And one that really happened."
"Really?"
"Settle down, I'll tell the story of Leeroy Jenkins..."

I don’t believe this conspiracy theory one bit, but it is delicious

The US and UK governments are bleeding authority so fast, the goal MUST be to invalidate themselves as the previously unquestioned loci of Westphalian sovereignty.
