New little feature on bird.makeup this weekend: the account page will now display the number of followers a user has, and also in which server that account is the most popular.

Hope this will help users find more niche servers that host the communities they want to be part of! Also if you are on a server like mastodon.social that bans bird.makeup and you want to move, this is now my recommended way to find a new home

@vincent didn't even realise mastodon.social had banned it rip

luckily my server owner @stux is pretty cool with it, as well as @thatonecalculator who operates my Calckey server (albeit Calckey doesn't really let me follow, but it's not on the servers end)

@vincent would be pretty cool if it displayed people who followed the specified account (yes, I'm following someone who has a Mastodon account that literally posts the same stuff, but bird.makeup is faster)

@thatonecalculator @vincent i spoke too soon then lol

honestly if there was like some sort of built in Twitter browser, I don't really give a **** about it being blocked for spam

i don't have a Twitter account and I don't want to deal with RSS ideally

@experiencersinternational@mstdn.social
@vincent@social.librem.one I mean, there is a built in RSS reader in Calckey, just paste https://nitter.it/username/rss into the source and you're good to go.

@experiencersinternational@mstdn.social @vincent@social.librem.one fair enough. There's calckey servers that don't block birdsitelive which may suit you better 🤷

@thatonecalculator @experiencersinternational Care to elaborate on the why? There’s stuff I might be able to tweak to make bird.makeup a better fediverse citizen.

@vincent@social.librem.one @experiencersinternational@mstdn.social well I'm generally against the whole birdsitelive idea as a whole (since I think fedi and twt should be separate entities), but probably the biggest thing to do would be making sure that posts from twt accounts are rare limited at a much higher rate than that does by default and make sure the accounts are marked as bots (last time I checked they weren't?)

@experiencersinternational @thatonecalculator yeah, it’s been like that for a while. I found that there is only @IceCubesApp that displays that accounts are bots as much as I’d like (both in profile and on the home feed)

@thatonecalculator @experiencersinternational that’s some good feedback, thanks!

Re: rate limiting, what did you find was too much? Too many posts, media, replies, accounts? Or more like the traffic was too bursty?

@vincent hi, for some reason i can't follow any account. The instance is not blocked however as this is my own instance

@vincent Hey there! I appreciate the work you've done on bird.makeup and find it very useful - but I've seen some concern from artist friends about their work being mirrored without consent. Could you please consider adding the ability for Twitter account owners to opt-out of the mirror service? Also, it would be *really* awesome if there was a mechanism to redirect a mirrored account's followers to their real Mastodon account if/when they make the jump here - could you please consider adding that functionality as well?

@baralheia I’m not sure it is possible on this end. Anyone can spin up an alternative instance of bird.makeup that doesn’t honour that since it’s open source. Stuff like that should be implemented on Twitter’s side

Working on a feature to help people find the people they want on the fediverse if they know their Twitter handle too

@vincent How would one go about preventing bird.makeup from mirroring an account from the Twitter side?

@vincent Repeatedly responding to requests for you to stop stealing artists' work by saying that other people could theoretically steal their work and therefore you will continue to do so is, the nastiest, slimiest, most vile way to respond. I hope you get sued.

Everyone everywhere should defederate from bird.makeup for its owner's unethical policy and abusive attitude.

#feditips

@vincent I would like my twitter accounts excluded from bird makeup:
@RikerGoogling @PicardTips @JoeSondow

Please delete the bird makeup accounts for those names.

@JoeSondow @vincent Is it possible to have a redirect (like a migrated Mastodon account) for bird.makeup accounts with known fediverse analogues?

I'm just thinking of those people who are looking to re-follow a Twitter account but not realize there is a native account that they should be following instead. That is probably a common occurrence.

@steve @vincent They can find those links from the twitter bios or mastodon search, without any bird makeup accounts existing to add duplicates to the mastodon search results.

@vincent I might missed it, but is there a way to let accounts redirect to the actual mastodon account?

@vincent I have not yet understood the system. How can I join? Or where do I get the api that I need after all. Something more on clarification would be desirable. Especially if you take into account that you have to translate everything. There no screens alone help.

@vincent ok, cloned the repo and spun it up but it doesn't seem to work out of the box, is there a bug tracker/dev forum to get this right? (I had birdsite.live running, so I know kind of what I am doing here..)

@vincent Did not consent to a mirror of my twitter account being created, get rid of it. Your tool also violates GDPR in Europe
