I do agree with your "garbage" terminology!
That's why I'm dropping the Nikon #w300.
Just before I read your toot I found http://gphoto.org/doc/remote/ . libgphoto2 seems to be the software to go with.
I'll have to see which hardware will work for me.

@chrichri Most of these wireless picture download solutions seem to be (sorry for the language) proprietary garbage. Maybe a USB-C microSD card reader or https://pine64.com/product/pinephone-microsd-extender/?v=0446c16e2e66 and are the easier and equally viable solution.
That aside, have you had a look at Entangle (https://entangle-photo.org/) and the cameras it supports? That could narrow the search down.
