@JonYoder this is fucking insane

Sex offenders are incredibly rare

Only a *miniscule* number of abductions are attributible to people the children didn't already know

Your kids are 10,000 (real number, not an exagerration) times more likely to be molsted by your family members than by anyone else

@sir @JonYoder yeah, sex offenders are super rare. My oldest don't walk or ride a bike to school alone for 2 simple reasons.
It's a little too far to walk and he hasn't yet proved that he can safely ride a bike in traffic alone.
He does ride a bike alone around the neighborhood where he doesn't have to cross streets with traffic though.
But I'm not in the US and the fear culture hasn't gotten quite as bad over here.

@qrsbrwn @JonYoder road safety is a more legitimate reason

Suburbs are a disease, you literally have no safe options for mobility or independence until you're 16 (and can afford a car!) and somehow it has a reputation for being a "good place" to raise children

@sir
Bicycling in the suburbs is very accessible even for grade-schoolers. Of course, this is provided that you stay relatively close to suburbia. Where I'm from, a younger highschooler could get themselves downtown from the suburbs without too much effort.

@zachdecook @qrsbrwn @JonYoder but there's nowhere to GO

And some parts of it will lack sidewalks, and biking around on streets designed for cars is dangerous
