Hi, I was asked to give a recommendation for a communication platform for event / project organization. It needs to be

- available for desktop and mobile devices
- usable for non-technical users (think Whatsapp)
- privacy respecting (therefore open source and self-hosted)

So far I've heard of Matrix, Mattermost, Zulip and Rocketchat, but Zulip is the only one I have used myself.

Could you tell me about your experiences using these or other apps?

Here is what I've found out so far. From what I've heard, Zulip is pretty sophisticated and quite popular with IT people. Unfortunately that makes it rather unusable for this use case.
Thanks to @clerie I can also sort out Rocketchat. That leaves Matrix and Mattermost

@frainz @clerie@chaos.social Tte benefit of Matrix is federation, and end to end encryption. Mattermost is self-hosted slack: an administrator can read direct messages.
