the people who kept telling us that movie piracy is a serious crime don't actually seem all that interested in paying people for making movies.

Thinking of starting a mastodon instance for myself and for past and current patreon supporter, where I could develop more fediverse projects I want to create.

Is that something that you would be interested in?

(and of course bird.makeup would never get banned on it)

English is a second language to me, feedback on the writing is always appreciated!

Many new people on the fediverse this week, and thus many discovering bird.makeup for the first time!

I wrote a thing this week in response to all the questions I got asked, about why (surprisingly) opt-outs would be counter-productive, and other stuff:

git.sr.ht/~cloutier/bird.makeu

It will never not be funny to me that most people’s first dedicated desktop Linux device will end up being a video game console.

Dang, a tornado warning for Montreal. That's a first.

First thing I wanted to explore is porting the twitter algo to the fediverse: github.com/twitter/the-algorit

(And all experiments would be opt-in, so your experience can stay vanilla mastodon if that is what you wish)

So I've been optimizing the number of calls I make to twitter this week ( git.sr.ht/~cloutier/bird.makeu ) and the error rate has been going down a lot.

It seems the user endpoint is the only one rated limited, so all the errors left are coming from that. You'll see that when looking at a profile or when trying to follow.

Still have many ideas on how I could optimize this further

“One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all.”—Arthur C. Clarke

and the gods saw that prometheus had stolen the YAML, and the gods thundered "NO!", but prometheus did not understand, for he heard only "Norway"

“Cancel culture” is just what conservatives call “the free market” when it does something they don’t like.

It's just now occuring to me that Wikimedia (Wikipedia, Wikidata etc.) is a big part of why non-Google search engines even have a fighting chance.
