Zero Trust seems to be the new buzzidea going around and it honestly seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Yes, you should secure your internal networking as if it's all accessible to the world, but getting rid of VPNs into company networks entirely just seems retarded.

Security works in layers. You should do your best to secure everything at each individual layer, but having the layer ensures that if someone does make it though, their attack surface is limited unless they can break through the next one.
