SpaceX's workhouse Falcon 9 rocket is powered by liquid oxygen, rocket-grade kerosene, and Linux

Like supercomputers, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and many mission-critical devices, the Falcon 9 flies with Linux. The Falcon 9's onboard operating system is a stripped-down Linux running on three ordinary dual-core x86 processors. The flight software itself runs separately on each processor and is written in C/C++.

@danie10 Quite unfortunately, they still use Windows for 'email, the web, and fun.' It would have been nice if they used Linux for everything. 😁

@sudo if they have "new" Win10 it may alreday have Linux built in πŸ˜‰ Linux is now truly getting everywhere

@danie10 πŸ˜„ Yeah. I guess Linux is 'getting everywhere'! Although, I do have to point out that Windows is just using the Linux kernel. As you might already know, what we call 'Linux' is more than just the kernel. In the end, I have to wonder. Is it really 'Linux' even though it uses the same kernel? πŸ€”

@sudo no, they have recently also expanded it further now to support running native Linux GUII apps with a "reverse" DirectX even. Yes can't recall on the actual kernel but I think it is otherwise they'd have issues with compatibility. I'm wondering where they are going with it seeing the GUI side is now emerging.

@danie10 I know. I heard. DirectX is just an API. There are a lot of elements in an OS besides a kernel and apps with a GUI. I may be wrong but I doubt that it is still 'Linux' we are actually talking about. I also doubt it is due to 'compatibility issues'. The same feat could have been achieved in a much better way as highlighted by @gbryant. πŸ€”
