@anantagd @renchap And likewise Mastodon is looking to hire someone instead of depending on volunteers.
But paying wages costs money. Money needs to come from somewhere. Mastodon doesn't profit from its users or from ads or from selling data, so the source of that money is donations.
The more money people donate, the more they can hire staff.
If a non-profit has money to pay staff without donations, one should question where the money comes from and for what purpose.
Yeah, platform was a bad choice of word. But as the content travels through the protocol, it makes no more sense to say that the platform of this post is Lemmy than it does to say that the platform of an email is Gmail, even if it is received by users on other providers.
The platform in a strict sense is, to a degree, irrelevant. I guess it's platform agnostic. If we had to name one maybe it's the fediverse.
(I'm not sure I even federate without tags, so: @DarkThoughts @lookmomnodrugs )
I don't think the question is stupid at all, the answer is just relative. On my end, the answer is a clear YES: I am seeing this on Mastodon, I am responding on Mastodon, I have no obvious way of telling you're not on Mastodon.
If "this" refers to the site you're posting from, the answer is obviously no. If it refers to the site it appears on, the answer depends on the reader.
If the question refers to the platform, I guess it's neither Mastodon or Lemmy, but ActivityPub.
@lookmomnodrugs
gotta say, douglas adams prepared me better for our absurd future than isaac asimov. like, spending hours explaining to a replicator AI how to make an excellent cup of tea, only to have the AI then lock up 100% of the ships computers resources mid-battle as it tries to comply with the request, that does seem like an increasingly more plausible scenario than a scientist planning a techno cult centuries in advance to prevent a great calamity
@nemobis To be fair, social.librem.one is an unmaintained, unmoderated mess.
There are still some decent people around here, but only because they haven't realized how bad the situation is due to a lack of discoverability on the instance.
I wouldn't blame anyone for blocking it, and anyone left on the platform would be better off leaving.
I don't know about the other instances you mention.
Get ready for shinier chord names! ✨️ Fretboard now utilizes the ♯ and ♭ characters throughout the entire app. The chord name entry has gained a deep understanding of how chord names are built up, and turns your sloppily typed abominations of chord names into properly formatted strings instantly 😎️
Thanks to @wjt for suggesting this!
@Anachron (I don't usually sound like an advertisement - I don't think there's any other company I would be this comfortable supporting. And there's always a risk they'll lose themselves as they grow, but so far my experience is nothing short of great.)
@Anachron Several times they have sent out surveys asking for feedback, and I feel that my response has been reflected in their actions as a company. Just a few months ago they rolled out a camera upgrade to the Fairphone 3, and as I'm on the mailing list I got an email where they asked if it was working well for me. Many times they have asked for feedback where you can write freely.
The company is, in my experience, outstanding. And my Fairphone 3 is great; the Fairphone 5 looks better.
@Anachron In that case I can report that I am extremely happy with my Fairphone 3. Not only do I love the phone, but the company itself is responsive to customers.
At some point I sent them an email about something, and they were not only responsive; their team even sent me follow-up emails to make sure things were working out well. And what I emailed them about was no fault of theirs.
@Anachron If you support their mission, it probably means you'd be willing to keep it for a while. In all likelihood it's going to last you longer than any other phone would, meaning that it will, at the end of its lifetime, have been quite a bit cheaper than the alternatives.
The camera looks good to me, but it is of course not the best available, and by the time the phone needs to be replaced it'll be even more outdated. I think, however, that it's more than good enough for 95% of people.
@thibaultamartin I just set the Obsidian vault to my Nextcloud notes folder, giving me easy access in the browser, on my phone, and on any laptop. Works like a charm.
@fredldotme I appreciate that the first screenshot is taken at 13:58, the second at 5:09. That's a serious all-nighter.
Looks like it paid off!
@mlundblad @flyingpimonster This is something I _really_ look forward to! Not only would it do wonders for GNOME Maps on my 4k display, but more importantly I really miss the map function in Shotwell showing where my pictures were taken.
Super happy to see the progress!
@PINE64 Said yes, but I guess really it depends. Sounds quality, of course, but equally important is that I do _not_ want a microphone. I don't want to have more microphones connected to the internet around me than absolutely necessary, no matter how much I trust the software.
@Nouscat For what it's worth, I feel like I learned something from the resulting discussion with @inthehands. I generally just shut up because I don't want to talk out of turn, but there's some (presumably) good advice in there about how to join the discussion without risking coming across as disrespectful. :)

@purism I appreciate that Librem Social is half discontinued and I have migrated my primary #Mastodon account somewhere else. However, I still check in here now and then, and I notice that it is still used by #Purism.
So: I wonder if you have any plans at all to upgrade the instance, if nothing else to version 3.5.11? There have been major security fixes, and running anything lower than 3.5.8 is neither recommended nor a good look for a company concerned with #privacy.
@z3ntu I guess it makes sense that the Fairphone 5 will be announced soon, but I kind of wish they would release new phones more rarely and focus on modular upgrades instead. If an even better camera module was released for the Fairphone 3 I would buy it in a heartbeat. :)
@PINE64 The beta website is looking great!
While the YouTube preview works great and is appreciated, have you considered embedding videos uploaded to PeerTube instead? I'm sure I'm not the first to raise the point (sorry!), but it would be nice to be able to avoid YouTube altogether. https://tilvids.com might be a suitable host. :)
