@adamdavidson @froomkin The point I wanted to make was, however, that these things are challenging, and I thing you and the team are doing a great job on it. Nothing about this even comes close to content moderation issues I've read about in other platforms.

@adamdavidson @froomkin By content I meant to refer to the content of the toots - not the shared media. So the insults would be part of the content. Sorry for not making that clear!

I think it's fair for journa.host to mandate higher standards of civility than other instances - nobody wants to see a bunch of journalists engulfed in flame wars.

What fascinates me the most is just the reach of this whole saga - how this ended up in the NYT makes me question a thing or two.

@adamdavidson @froomkin As far as I can see, the entire article boils down to "sometimes, content moderation is difficult".

And at the core of the whole debate is a couple of posts that would be considered mild by Twitter standards. I guess people are just starving for drama.

In the end, the challenge of an instance like this might be to establish a culture rather than to moderate content. Hopefully that will get easier once people get used to the fact that they're not on Twitter any more.

Now that you're here, we're listening!

What kind of content would you like to see from us?

@WhoLovesDean There are a few instances dedicated to shitposting - I've seen hellsite.site , jorts.horse , godforsaken.website , myasstodon.xyz , and smores.town brought up. Not into the scene myself though, so can't verify the quality of either, but at least they're all anti fascist, so that's cool.

In general, my guess is that Mastodon might be more suited for more normal interactions, but it'll be interesting to see how the scene develops.

@WhoLovesDean These two instances are blocked off for new registrations right now. This is precisely so that the team can keep up with moderation in light of the increased traffic over the last month.

Unless you have a very specific reason you want to be on a server hosted by Gargron, there's no reason not to settle down on another one! :)

If your podcast is hosted on @Castopod your audience can listen to your episodes from @Mastodon but also like, share and comment them!

@andrewmelder@twit.social That said, I think it's alo fine that some instances are more trigger-happy than others when it comes to blocking.

Personally I'm happy to see a broad variation of content, even when I strongly disagree, as long as it's not trolling or straight out deplorable. I totally understand that others might have higher standards.

That some instances would rather block too much than too little is fine, as long as that policy is clear to the users of that instance.

@csteacher @Ciaraioch has been corrupt forever, and the players have power to stand up against them. FIFA has no reason to change anything, they're laughing all the way to the bank, and they know perfectly well by now they can get away with murder.

At this point I'm not mad at FIFA, I'm mad at anyone enabling them - be it the players, sports journalists, or broadcasting networks.

@kathygriffin As a music enthusiast, it frustrates me that Phil Spector was such a god awful human that I can't reasonably hate him for what he did to the music industry. The wall of sound was enough to guarantee him a spot in hell, but in light of what a shitty person he was it comes across as irrelevant.

@molly0xfff One hell of an approach - "those who remember history will hopefully forget all about it in a few months so that they can repeat it"

@neelibby @megalithic @tomthemac Nobody here hold any authority over anyone, don't worry. Some people might come across as if they own the place, whether they intend to or not, but that's just how people are. The fact is that the only ones in charge are the administrators of each instance, and most instances are newer than the Twitter migration. You own the place as much as anyone. :)

...and knowing the ideologies around here, I'm not sure luddite is even that negative! Haha

@stephenfry Good thing they added the line about the British having a long tradition of being respectful of other cultures and being loved internationally, if not it would have been impossible to tell this was satire.

@ikaferrergotich I'm sure people have different reasons, but in my case it's about privacy. I want an online search for my name to return as little as possible about myself. If I get another account using my full name, I would restrict it to purely work-related content.

I don't want to have a personal online presence.

I don't want people who Google me to find my reflections on how I feel about an online presence. I want them to find my work, and nothing else. I think the internet is creepy.

Those relaxing story apps seem like a great idea until you realise they're all read by people with British accents, which means that instead of drifting off to a restful sleep you just unconsciously start panic-hiding potatoes

@fairyqueen91 There's something that feels very old internet revivalist about everybody suddenly getting excited about alt texts again.

Not what I expected from 2022, but welcome for sure!

@jhpot Great article, congrats.

I had no idea server operators could read DMs - maybe it's because I never sent one, hopefully it's well indicated. In either case this seems likea pretty major setback - does anybody know the rationale behind it? Or is it due to technical limitations?

For moderation purposes, one would think it would be enough for the conversion to become readable if either party reports it to moderators.

I've come on mastodon to share a piece about mastodon, which sounds like the kind of cannibalistic self-referentialism that started mad cow disease theguardian.com/media/2022/nov
