Ahhhh! All this time! That explains a lot.

@themugue@chinwag.org Outrage and agency are not correlated. Becoming more outraged does not increase one's ability to influence the world. Being aware of what's going on elsewhere in the world is good but that awareness rarely translates into an increased ability to do something about it.

@adam There's an error in thinking here. A "brand" isn't alive or sentient. It can never be said to "care", any more than a mathematical equation or a credit card agreement can be said to "care". This is inherent in its nature. The class of objects "brands" cannot intersect with the class of objects "capable of caring".

Of course, getting you to believe that the brand *can* care, and more importantly that the brand cares about the same things you do, is the job of the marketroid. Resist!

@falgn0n Is only Siths dealing in absolutes.. an absolute?

@sir I don't think "immoral" covers it, it's much worse than a violation of moral norms. It's an attack on human consciousness. The attack is science-based, ubiquitous and relentless.

@sir I think it's much worse and more sinister than that. The advertising industry is built to manipulate people's entire world view so that they see giving their money to those who advertise as either a duty or a means to avoid suffering. There are consequences to this mass manipulation of world views that are much deeper than dollars spent and which we won't understand for many years.

PSA: The National Grid (in the UK) cannot distinguish between sources of electricity. One cannot be "switched" from one source to another. The idea that one can change one's electricity supplier and then get "green" electricity is about economics and marketing, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the electrons that enter and exit the home through one's distribution box. It's a fantasy.

When I see marketroids talking about "green" electricity I feel sad for them and the people who believe them.

@liw I agree, it's definitely all about the tools.
