Now the cat is out of the bag anyway (I shouldn't have told people lol), I got #glacier running on #postmarketOS

@bart Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is glacier?

@leimon It's a FOSS replacement for the proprietary UI of SailfishOS. It uses the old Mer (nowadays Sailfish) stack underneath, and is based on Qt and QML.

@bart @leimon still curious what that means? Completely free Sailfish?

@petrisch @leimon Yes! However note that it's not completely free Sailfish_OS_ as that is a different OS altogether. This is just the Sailfish base with a FOSS UI on top of it.

@bart @leimon thanks for the clarification. The part is clear. Still that makes it a valid alternative for and ?

@petrisch @leimon Uh, that is a strange question. The #librem5 and the #pinephone are phones, physical devices. #postmarketos and #sailfishos are software distributions. They can't be compared

@bart @leimon so far so clear, but sailfishos ui on those two seemed rather impossible no?

@petrisch @leimon Not really. Actually, there is even a SailfishOS (with proprietary UI) port in the works for the #PinePhone. Not for the #Librem5 afaik, but nothing is impossible.

Follow

@bart @leimon ah that one i didn't know, so thanks for the explanation! And thanks for all the great work!!

@petrisch @bart @leimon

One way to think about the difference in hardware is that #Librem5 is designed to run vanilla #linux on a nearly-open phone-form computer. #PostmarketOS and #Sailfish are doing something quite hard: run an open OS on not-open phone hardware.

@Amgine @petrisch @leimon You're forgetting the #PinePhone 😉 But do note that #postmarketOS runs on both the #PinePhone and #Librem5 as well, not just on not-open phones.
