Here is an absolutely brilliant analysis by one of our members of the problem that ails technology in the 21st century. Absolutely recommended reading:
I hate to ask, but here goes.
I've been looking a while and nothing with the right fit has come along. Work life balance is super important. If UK, happy to work completely in your timezone!
My site is https://rusingh.com and I'm happy to email you my CV/resume. Will start immediately once we're on the same page. 💯
Did your employer participate in the #StopHateForProfit boycott in July?
We raised awareness, but Zuck dismissed our demands. The protest must continue. Here is a template for raising the issue at your next all hands meeting.
the-federation.info - a fediverse stats site - is looking for a new maintainer. In the Feneas matrix room today, the current maintainer @jaywink said:
Remember when #DeleteFacebook was trending? Now is the time to finally do it! 💪😎 https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-engineer-quits-accuses-company-of-profiting-off-hate-2020-9?r=DE&IR=T
Here are our recommended alternatives to leave Facebook and Google; Mastodon included of course. 😉 https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/how-to-leave-google-gmail/
I just launched a new list for the #delightful project:
*delightful sustainable business*
A curated list of sustainable business resources and exemplars of online businesses
Still fairly empty, the focus is on companies based on #FOSS projects, or providing SaaS-based or other online services
AND.. there will be exemplars of said businesses 😃
So if you think your company should be added, pls file an issue to the tracker. Any contrib welcome!
Boosts welcome too :)
#ShowerThoughts: Free code development allows for cooperative competition, in ways that are not possible with proprietary software. For example, devs from all the free code chat apps could pick one competitor per year, audit their apps for trackers and other user-disrespecting anti-features, and publish a report with links to where they are in the source code .
I've spent more than 20 years as an anti-capitalist organizer. I've seen so many innovative non-capitalist projects fail because they can't sustain themselves on volunteer labour and donations. Cooperatives, social enterprises, and B Corps offer a third alternative to a) struggling along in the margins, or b) selling out to for-profit capitalists.
@charlag @darius @cj The car key metaphor is usually the introductory metaphor used, yes. https://librelounge.org/episodes/episode-13-object-capabilities-with-kate-sills.html probably is the easiest starting place, http://habitatchronicles.com/2017/05/what-are-capabilities/ is the next best one, and if you can read scheme and are ok with something a bit more academic, http://mumble.net/~jar/pubs/secureos/secureos.html is my favorite paper of all time and shows how "it's just normal programming flow"
@Thib My personal use-case is building a cross-native framework (both desktop/mobile) that "just works" peer-to-peer but is AP. So anyone can build decentralized mobile-and-desktop-first P2P AP apps.
Separately, removing DNS will remove the last tie to a centralized store.
That means a global P2P censorship resistant internet network without treating mobile as a second class citizen.
Much of the centralized architecture of the web took off in reaction to a phone's intermittent data connectivity.
Planned obsolescence can undermine privacy - and our pocketbook. For example, Apple computers, that get phased out of new software updates, may force us to make unnecessary choices.
This could force us to purchase new computers (when they are still viable) and to use hardware and software that may be outside our needs.
Try to install Linux before you opt for a new device. POP_OS performs wonderfully on outdated iMacs. Many distros can take a slow Windows PC and give it new life.
I've spotted that on #Friendica, another instance recognizes somehow that you're a Friendica user from somewhere, and kind of logs you in as a remote user, if I remember things correctly. Wondering if there's any standard or protocol or approach either being discussed or already adopted, for such kind of logins in background as a remote user? IMO this is how #Fediverse and #decentralized networks in general should work. Otherwise we end up constantly logging in on multiple instances.
The anthropologist David Graeber just died. He is one of my primary intellectual influences, and his book DEBT changed my life back in 2011: https://bookshop.org/books/debt-updated-and-expanded-the-first-5-000-years-revised/9781612194196
Some articles of his that are also really important to me:

I don't wanna argue with random YouTube commenters about why Facebook owning and meddling with Oculus is bad, and why being an original Kickstarter backer is relevant to that argument.
The fact of the matter is, even if they didn't sell any consumer builds of the hardware before the Facebook takeover, I personally, and literally hundreds of other early VR videogame developers, sunk a significant investment of development costs into the original two dev kits and their hardware drivers,
only to have the rug pulled out from under us as a walled garden suddenly appeared at the last moment and we were forced to upgrade our drivers and sell in their market or get out, basically?
No? myaa, come on. I'm on Linux, I paid hundreds of dollars for VR hardware, and I can't even use it because of commercial interests and spyware.
Really interesting and deep analysis of how interoperability may be a path to better competition in the social media space. Pairs well with Cory Doctorow's recent book touching similar themes: https://onezero.medium.com/how-to-destroy-surveillance-capitalism-8135e6744d59
The #GAFAM game plan
1. Build a garden
2. Lure people into the garden
3. Imprison the people inside by building a wall around the garden
4. Gradually destroy the garden and build a shopping mall in its place 🤑
