In this panel, Christopher Lemmer Webber discusses ActivityPub's server-to-client and server-to-server protocols, and how they could be used to allow people to use a single account to log in to many Fediverse clients. This seems like an immensely useful feature, that could offer enough ease of use to entice people to join the Fediverse. Are there projects working on this?

@strypey I think your analysis is spot on. Mirowski sure is always thought-provoking to hear though. He gave a recent interview about how COVID-19 crisis was more of an opportunity than a threat for the neoliberal project. You might find it interesting if you haven't seen it: soundcloud.com/poltheoryother/

"Hence, when it came to the simple matter of bamboozling the masses with ripping tales of government as the very embodiment of evil, as Friedman did, there were never any qualms expressed about their simultaneous drive to take over the Republican Party, and then the U.S. government, in order to impose a strong state and an even stronger set of state-instituted novel markets."

Fascinating interview with Phil Mirowski on why COVID-19 is more of an opportunity than a threat for neoliberalism. soundcloud.com/poltheoryother/
@lightweight might find this interesting.

I only recently learned about Digital Research and its founder Gary Kildall, but this history really makes it seem like Bill Gates ripped off CP/M to launch Microsoft. Is this right?? youtube.com/watch?v=hJNaAG2BXo

@sir What are some of the open source projects that people love? I actually just recently started donating to @libreoffice

Cool, got LibreOffice on my laptop integrated with NextCloud's WebDAV.

Now I can edit documents from my desktop, mobile, or the web interface, and the document data should update without any problems.

This is good progress. 😎

@lightweight Thanks for this reply! Somehow I didn't get a notification and only see your answer a week later. This is really interesting. It really seems technology-wise, we are stuck in a bad equilibrium because of network effects in many ways. And if we could all easily switch to a new technology model, everyone would be better off and more productive.

@mpanhans the whole desktop domain model employed by Windows (and forced upon any Macs & Linux machines that want to participate) and the VPN/RDP practice are all extremely heavy & dated. A modern org should be 100% web based in its systems (fully client-server), including file sharing (if they insist on using shared filesystems, they should use WebDAV with something like NextCloud. A file sync option is also there). Really clever organisations will have a "single source" policy w/ git :)

@theprivacyfoundation Thanks for the reply, this is a really interesting point. I'm very sympathetic to increasing privacy, and these are great responses to some of the anti-privacy arguments I've heard.

@theprivacyfoundation Relatedly, last year Chris Cox left Facebook over Zuckerberg's pivot to encryption. Cox thought encryption made it harder to filter out fake news, hate speech, detect human trafficking. If Cox had won and Facebook had not pivoted to encryption, and Facebook's tools would not be able to be used for human trafficking, wouldn't we be in a better world?

I have a sincere question for @theprivacyfoundation and the community. The DOJ announced it's investigating Senator Richard Burr, who sold off $1.7m in stock before the coronavirus crash, while assuring the public it was under control. His brother-in-law sold off too. Search warrants were used to collect data from his iCould account and cell phone. With encryption, it would be hard to investigate this case. Privacy makes it harder to root out corruption. What's the response?

@lightweight I’ve wondering about this too; it seems switching costs are high for organizations and people are anxious about change. I’m curious what you mean though by “the whole model of remote working required by Microsoft”. What does a different model look like?

Ranked Choice Voting can create more fair elections, lessen political polarization, and eliminate the possibility of spoiler candidates so voters can express their true preferences. Here is a very nice explainer video created by FairVote:

LibreOffice has extensive documentation, thanks to our worldwide community. Today we're announcing an update to the Base Guide, a 470+ page handbook covering all aspects of database creation and management: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl

I wonder if @purism would consider hosting instances of other fediverse applications with its bundle? Librem Social is a great Twitter alternative. Users are also trying to find alternatives to Facebook and Instagram, and hosting instances of software like Friendica and PixelFed alongside Librem Social would be a convenient and useful package.

@lightweight Very interesting. I received a BA, MA, and PhD in economics, and never encountered Raworth's writings until seeing this post. It would be good for formal economics education to include more "renegade" and diverse perspectives.
