I think my favorite dark pattern in modern websites is the "manage cookies" pop up that gives you multiple switches to click, without telling you what clicking them actually changes or which direction does what.

It seems to me that a lot of people have bounced off of the Fediverse proper and ended up at more centralized alternatives (Threads, Bluesky) in no small part because the experience was decentralizing. Meaning: a lot of their expectations and approaches to social media were formed around their relation to a centralized authority in previous networks they had used. In that regard, joining the fediverse imposes a pretty radical reorientation that is often unequal and invisible to others.

If you live in unstable power grid area it’s a good idea to add this rule to your #Tasmota smart plug on your always-on servers. This way they will wait 15 minutes before turning on the plug again on boot after the US has died. A lifesaver during brownouts.
