Putin is Unlikely to Demobilize in the Event of a Ceasefire Because He is Afraid of His Veterans

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a coordinated campaign in late 2022 and early 2023 to prevent the emergence of an independent veterans-based civil society in Russia, likely out of fear that veteran groups could threaten the stability of hi…

OTD 1978: Kernighan & Ritchie's "The C Programming Language" is published. My most precious artifact is Draft #1 of the same.

WTF?!!
Is snac2 giving me a… roman salute?

Happy #Caturday folks, starting my day off with Coffee and Cat time, have a good one! 👍

@randahl
This was always rumours, but I'm afraid these rumours might not be ungrounded, there a many indirect hints, e.g. Belgium postponed providing Ukraine with F-16s because the US is delaying shipping F-35s which were supposed to replace these planes.
This was never official, but it very well could be part of the plan to force Zelensky into negotiating on unfavourable terms 🤷

@AndrewWalmsley @randahl
Replacing Starlink would be problematic, but not impossible — much greater problem is satellite imagery and military intelligence the Pentagon is sharing, long-range missile and UAV strikes deep into Russia's territory depend on it heavily and I'm afraid Trump might insist on shutting that down. No one in Europe simply has the capacity to stand in.

@coolboymew @kaia @romin
Ore Monogatari is so sweet — it even made me cry once 😍
I remember these two being romcoms:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Littl
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_Gir
But if memory serves me right, both are somewhat "unconventional" — I remember absolutely HATING every character in the latter, but somehow I ended up finishing it 😅 Have to re-watch all three sometime.

@s1r83r @rl_dane
Support for both can be enabled in Firefox with image.avif.enabled and image.jxl.enabled in about:config.
And support for WebP could be disabled this way until recently — now I have to patch back the option to disable this abomination 😩
Yes, I hate WebP and I think it should have never existed. Google having control even over codecs is a nightmare even if they aren't collecting royalties, they still exploit it to their advantage.

@rl_dane @s1r83r
It's a truly open codec having multiple implementations, unlike WebP — in case with which there is only reference one: libwebp, which most software depends on and over which Google has complete control.
That is probably why they torpedo it and push for WebP instead — AFAIK they did drop support for it in Chrome, not sure if they ever added it back.

@rl_dane @s1r83r
It's not a Google project, it's JPEG — Joint Photographic Experts Group, the same group that's behind original JPEG and JPEG2000, it's a further development of the latter. AFAIK Google only contributed one of the algorithms used — they aren't the sole developer, nor they have complete control over it, like they have over WebP.

The dinner became supper, but a success nonetheless! 🤤
Sorry for non-vegan content, in case you're one — I assure you, it was already dead when I found it… in the fridge 😏

But what's best — I now have a week worth of it: huge bowl of bulgur and over 3 litres of soup. Now I can just reheat it — all the more time to waste on computerneering!

@aliceif @feditips @ApostateEnglishman
Also not a native speaker, I find character limit helpful in keeping my thoughts consistent — it makes me avoid more spacious descriptions and stay on point. I have my own instance that I sometimes use for longer-form replies and I know from practice that what was five 500 character posts won't become one 2500 character one if I lift the limit, it becomes three 5000 character ones 😂

@ozzelot
I used to be into portable computing thingies, but since phones became more performant than workstations of the not-so-distant past, it kinda lost its flair for me — I either take a smol laptop with me which occupies less space in the backpack than a book would or just the phone: it's enough for communication, videos, music — not a fan of reading books from the screen, but it's also a possibility, and it's nice to take a break from other computing things once in a while 🤷

@ozzelot
Not that I know of — neither they have the budget to develop their own fork of Microsoft Wendy's emulator, but you know what…
(three letter) Galaxy Deck — that would actually sound quite cool 🤩
Besides, not sure it's still true, but a significant portion of their catalogue would run nicely even on my T43, I even remember playing original C&C and Planescape Torment during that summer… in WINE! I know these games aren't exactly new themselves, but man — this laptop is insane! 😂
