e2fsck has "-c" parameter, which makes it perform a check whether blocks can actually be written. If you are using ext2/3/4 of course.
But otherwise — yeah, long SMART test might shed some light, you can initiate it with smartctl from smartmontools. I'd advise booting from some sort of rescue media to perform the test so your system won't be interfering with it.
