Queen? Yeah man, nobody but you has that in their collection.
> I should have two computers instead of one
You can even plug an USB hard drive into your router — it would be a poor file server, but still enough to listen to the music and watch 4k movie rips.
Don't have a router because power is cheap and you prefer using a computer with active cooling for that too? 😂
That was my original point, the role of this machine is unclear to me.

@iska
Getting a UPS isn't much of a problem — always having good batteries in one is!

She's not that type of goth, she could be one that enjoys drinking absinthe at your local cemetery though 🤭

> ext4 doesn't support RAID
That's the point, why bother with RAID if you can grab that stuff from original media (or illegally p2p-download it if that is more your thing) — in case you ever lose it.
> I don't have other computers on the network
There are still good reasons to have those things available without having your main rig running — like power saving.
I also really appreciate being able to enjoy music and movies without having to keep any "real" computer running.

@newt
Of course it does, but none of them are relevant for storing stuff like music and movies that you can easily download again — I'd rather have stuff like that on a plain ext4 partition on a spinning rust hard drive that spins down to save power in half an hour of inactivity, plugged into an ARM machine like Raspberry Pi.
Run samba and minidlna on it and you can access your library from any machine on the network — watch movies directly from the TV, no need to keep your workstation running.

@newt
I can't come up with what role this machine might have — a workstation? Why so much storage then? 30 Tb seems too much for there to be any redundancy, I'd rather go for redundancy at the cost of having less space. And if it's just a volume for throwaway stuff (and not rare digitised music does belong to this category), why bother with zfs at all?
If it's a file server of some sort, why bother having a GUI — the less stuff you have installed, smaller the attack surface to worry about 🤷

@newt
Having a GUI on a machine with a 30 Tb ZFS volume is indeed pretty homosexual 😏

When I realised that 9 out of 10 times I can't log into my GMail account because I refuse to give them a phone number I did it one final time and deleted it.
Funny enough, in order for me to retrieve all the data from that account they still insisted on providing a phone number, but I didn't have to give them one in order to delete it 🤦

A very very ugly chain of pipes, awk, sed, and xargs just saved me from hours of tedious and unexpected clicking in a stupid web-interface.

Learn some basic #shell scripting when you're young, it will help keeping you sane.

I think in Canada they send you one with a naked molerat if you don't pay: dontgetsextorted.ca/images/mol
At least they had a campaign like that a few years ago 😆

If you have some old CDs sitting around consider ripping them before disc rot makes them unusable. Fortunately you can always rip partially degraded disks using whipper. I've used it to make perfect rips of very old discs, stuff dating back 30 years which I had used and abused as a teenager. It takes some time to do its thing but it's worth the effort:

@StefanThinks
> I didn’t get the movie reference
I don't quite get it myself, is this a line from Die Hard or something? 🤔

@newt
Some of this could've been done outside the FPS thing, and I think that the director did take those hints when he was making his next movie — the one with Bob Odenkirk, and that was a good and successful one!
This one? No — it feels rushed! It even has high-profile Russian actors, so I don't think it was solely due to lack of funding — the concept was just rushed with no obvious competition. Then again — it wasn't a bad movie, did exceed my expectations.

@newt
Oh, man, come on, it's not about the main character! There was so much to explore given proper funding — side characters, they could've given his "wife" a proper arc that would make you literally crave her (which would've still been fake), all of the supporting cast could've been given their own arcs — but the only one we see that has been worked on is his sidekick, and I agree with those reviews: this just wasn't enough!
