@sai There was a screenshot circulating around some time ago of a hardware review and the guy actually called it Hitler threading. Or was he selling his PC and described it? I don't remember.
It was so hilarious that I call it this way ever since.
OMG you already knew that, right? 😅
@sneak Homebrew had a command line switch for interactive build which gave you a shell before configure phase so you could apply patches. Can't you do the same with nixpkgs and fix it manually?
@sai OMG, P4 was a total failure, a disaster! Especially the Hitler threading.
But then laptops started to gain steam and focus shifted from performance to power efficiency so they've switched back to microarchitecture based on P3 and the whole Centrino thing overall was a huge success. Sadly, AMD wasn't fast enough to realise which way the wind blows 😢
@fribbledom @exception Here we go: https://www.gsmarena.com/asus_rog_phone_6_pro-11648.php
18 gigabytes of RAM. I think you can host a Matrix server on this 😅
@safiuddinkhan@fosstodon.org Using anything by Facebook is like being in extremely unhealthy relationship. I don't know how anyone actually uses for anything other than posting cat pics and doesn't get banned every half an hour.
What absolutely baffles me is how girls try to promote their OnlyFans on Instagram. I mean everyone gets that they want to sell their nude pics, but they still post the same pics with nipples painted over with a spray tool or something. This is so… grotesque! Beyond my comprehension.
@sai @Epsi@mk.absturztau.be Oh, thanks! 😹
@Slips 😂Yes it does!
I've discovered alacritty looking for st replacement when I was migrating to sway and wayland.
@Slips Wow, I didn't know alacritty had X11 support. I used to think of it as of wayland-only. Good to know!
@iska@mstdn.starnix.network @charlotte You could tear the wires off the PC speaker, wrap them around the headphone jack and enjoy the celestial sounds 😇
Still easier than using that tiny adapter to plug them into the phone, right?
@AmericanFlat It took me over three hours to realise it was a Kaczynski reference. God do I feel st00pid! 🤦
@sneak You're right! The SoCs in those are usually rather dated and they tend to choose cheaper panels for some reason.
@allison Yes, CRTs=eyestrain. Even IPS-panels are a bit hard on the eyes IMO. I turn off the second display when I don't need it.
Now I see, your demands are pretty specific. The solutions to save you from the monastery should already be on their way though. I mean even midrange phones have 120 Hz now. ARM-based desktops and laptops will follow suit soon enough as mainstream moves away from Intel.
@allison Yes, you are most probably right!
I am a man of the last decade in this regard. It did matter in the CRT days, but not anymore, not for me. I know there are nice things like HDR, HiDPI and way higher refresh rates, but I'm still perfectly fine with my two 30" Cinema Displays 😄
@sneak There are Chinese brands of smartphones like Blackview and Ulefone with bulkier designs and larger batteries. Some have this "rugged" look, others don't. I'm pretty sure you can find something close to this on AliExpress. Will it look as good in the flesh as it does on the pictures — not so sure 😅
@allison Why Apple then, still like the OS (OS X? macOS? Whatever it is called now)?
There is a wide selection of PCs on the market in the vein of Mac Mini. System76 has it, Purism has it, a few lesser-known brands have them, ARM-based too.
Some can accommodate both SATA and M2 drives at the same time, up to 64 gigs of RAM, newest CPUs — you can't have a decent GPU in it, but otherwise a real powerhouse in a small box!
@FiXato @fribbledom At least they got the taste of how life is here. If they still like Twitter better — so be it.
@allison @iska@mstdn.starnix.network @coyote @dushman @idiot I gave up on Apple and stopped keeping track on the new models, so I can only speculate why they did this. It might be easier for them to follow the same hardware design principle everywhere and since it's soldered-in on the laptops, it's the same on the Mini. It might also be more efficient supply chain wise to use similar parts in desktops 🤷
@allison @iska@mstdn.starnix.network @coyote @dushman @idiot And don't get me wrong, I don't like this approach myself. When they presented the first MacBook Air I hated that abomination. But then I realized that a lot of people appreciate such a design and that the path Apple has chosen is just not for me. But to each their own, so I just moved on and took a look at companies for which compact size it not the top priority.
