Secure Messaging for Dummies

1. Get a server; a raspberry pi, an old desktop, a 48 UI behemoth, whatever.

2. Determine which secure messaging protocol you want to host.

3. Install and configure the server software on your server.

4. Create a user guide and help educate your loved ones on the necessary tools and on opsec.

5. Get a VPS.

6. Set up a Wireguard endpoint on your VPS's public IP.

7. Connect your server to the wireguard network.

8. Connect your loved ones to the wireguard network.

Why do I see none of the cool "girls who like to be choked during sex" threads from this instance? Does Mastodon not pass the age restriction, not high enough to ride? 🤭

An #introduction post is probably appropriate. So: Hello from #norway !

I'm here hoping to find interesting #DIY #electronics and other nerdy projects, in addition to sharing my own stuff.

I've been fiddling with #esp32 microcontroller/WiFi modules for a while, and will probably post my share of esp32 related projects.

My primary programming languages are #php #cpp #javascript

I do #pcb design with #Kicad, simple 2D design with #qcad and 3D work in #freecad.

I write about some of my projects on my personal blog, espenandersen.no

My GitHub repository is found at github.com/espena

My cats have an additional feature of being visually barely distinguishable, to the point they sometimes merge, there is one particularly funny photo of a "Chernobyl two-headed cat" — I might post it on Fedi when I come across it next time 😸

@EricIndiana
My first thoughts: Joey's eyes sure look weird in this photo — took me a few seconds to realise that those aren't his eyes, but his left eyebrow and ear 😹

Столь тонкая отсылка к Ширли-Мырли, моё почтение! 🥂

@gordoooo_z
Well, anyway — good to know about 6T, I'll look into getting a used one. Poco X3 Pro was great for me to check out alternative mobile operating systems: it can run Sailfish, Ubuntu Touch/UBPorts and Droidian — all daily-drivable, albeit shorter battery life. But daily driving a PMOS device with swmo/swmo was always my dream 🤩

@gordoooo_z
Nah, probably it's just outdated — speaking from experience, it's not uncommon for communities working on making more mobile devices compatible to be too self-absorbed — not notifying the outside world on the progress they make. When you arrive at their group chat and ask where to start, there are usually no guides — no nothing, and no one can't even remember how they did it themselves, because it was long time ago for them 😂

@Hyolobrika
When I post audio on Fedi I usually remove metadata from the file itself, but put artist and song name in the alt text — describing it would be overkill and in most cases, like I stated above — pointless.
I probably would attempt to describe it if it's some stock music the same way they do in closed captions: [upbeat rock music].

@Hyolobrika
It's m0xEE.Net or .Org or .Com — should be the same for gemini and it's reachable via http too, but only on .Net — with little CSS it doesn't even look that bad!
I even announce here when I post something on my gemlog, I'm just too shy (paranoid 🤫) to put it on my bio.

Well, most my posts are "inspired" by something on Fedi and are essentially long form reply, so this one probably qualifies too.

@newt
It's certainly not what got ME into it — I was born into postmodernism, these things aren't what I'm looking for in a work of art 🤷

@newt
How did we arrive in the era of postmodernism then?
I'm not even sure about myself — it took me over a decade to find out why Joyce is considered modernist, considering the whole language as medium thing. It took a great deal of explanation that beside that Ulysses actually has a very solid plot and follows many well-established storytelling techniques, does it quite masterfully.

@munir
Ha-ha-ha, it's not that I get offended when I do not get responses… it's just with Fedi you can never be certain that the posts get propagated, whether the one you're replying to even knows of your reply's existence. Sometimes I even go to the frontend of the instance of the one I'm replying to and check if my post is there — of course if the instance has public access to its posts.

@newt
It's not about how you learned about it, it's about what you appreciate in it — for you it's classic storytelling and solid plot devices, is it for most others? I'm honestly not sure 😅
