To transfer the configuration to my proxy I have to disconnect the VPN on my phone — this process is extremely daunting, I can't do this download configurations one at a time 😩

I can probably guess the reason why it was done: people were keeping outdated configurations, but that's not the reason to remove the option — add a warning, don't remove it for the ones who know precisely what they are doing. I'm a Proton Unlimited customer, there are over a thousand of servers in US alone, I hope at least one of them might still be accessible and I can still have uncensored access not on my phone only.

To make matters worse you have removed the option to download OpenVPN configurations in bulk.
I'm in Russia, so most servers are blocked, I'm attempting to find a configuration that might still work, but I can only access the download page from my phone where Stealth works. I don't have the luxury to download them one-by-one 🤬

Duopoly is only part of the problem, the fact that it becomes mandatory to have a smartphone is already pretty bad, even if there were forth or fifth choice 🤷

I didn't own a cellphone in mid 2000s and it was pretty hard to get certain thing done already, now is the time when you are forced to have a smartphone, and one of the current ones to boot, capable of running applications from official stores that often impose a slew of restrictions themselves: Google Play services and all that 😫

In 2011-2013 it was a different generation of Russians — they did better, but that hardly was enough, what culminated in Maidan in Ukraine, in Russia only became a turning point on the path to solidifying authoritarianism. I remember those events well and I wanted to recapture them and explain how we got where we are now the way I see it — it's a long post and I'm only halfway finished, will probably post it later this week.

I'm not attempting to shift the blame and paint Russians as innocent victims — but blaming Russians alone accomplishes nothing and explains nothing.
As for Russians — I think lack of democratic tradition was a major factor, this explains the remaining 3 of your points, don't forget that those who should've rebelled at the time are those who are in their 50-60ies now, most of that generation still doesn't understand what's going on.

The report blamed Georgia for starting the war, stating that open hostilities started "... with a large-scale Georgian military operation against the town of Tskhinvali and the surrounding areas, launched in the night of 7 to 8 August 2008"
…and there was "... no way to assign overall responsibility for the conflict to one side alone."

It's easy to pin it all on Russians in retrospect🤷

A level of liberalism probably only seen in Moscow, for me it's not hard to believe that in other regions people had to take a photo of their ballots — and I've seen instructions online on how to make a fake checkmark out of a piece of thread for those who wanted to vote, but not for United Russia (there were parliamentary elections at the time, not presidential ones).
