Phew! At least that is not some Russian "innovation". Not that innovation is the Russian approach, usually it's "worst of all worlds": take the standards of living of a poor Asian country, but with climate of Scandinavian countries, slap taxes of richest European countries over it — that's it! Done! 🤣

@thor When a person gets his paycheck, he only sees 13% and the government tells him he has lowest tax rate. It's the employer who is responsible for paying for mandatory medical care and some other taxes. Employees don't do their tax papers and don't realize they are getting paid less because of it.
The prices we have on price tags in retail have VAT included, they don't show it like: here's the real price + 20% tax.
The real amount people pay in taxes is highly obfuscated.

@markusl You're right, it can always go wrong. Even if it doesn't, that stuff being really strong is no joke — this comes from a person who can alone drink a bottle of vodka or whiskey and still solve differential equations… well, sort of 🤭
Even if it's properly refined, the alcohol poisoning is still dangerous.
The fact that you have A LOT of this stuff and you don't have to leave the comfort of your home to get more, makes it dangerous for most.

@thor In Russia it's not a matter of taxes. Although the taxes are pretty high, the government somehow made people think that if they don't do the papers themselves, it's some evil capitalist who pays those taxes — not them, who get paid less for their job and pays more for goods. Doesn't matter. A lot of people are piss-poor, so no one minds saving on alcohol.
Another factor is soviet-era tradition of home distilling from the times when Gorbachev banned alcohol.

@thor If you are into strong alcohol, it's not that hard and definitely worth it!
My mother has a friend whose husband is into this and they've invited us over before the COVID hell broke loose. He had it in all shapes, sizes and colours: this one's based on some berries, this is just plain alcohol like vodka, etc.
It was dirt-cheap to make, but really good unlike cheap stuff you can get from the store. So strong though — I barely remember how I got home 🥴
