So you want an example of why copyright doesn't do shit for real-life artists who aren't already fucking rich?

One of my friends got their music sampled by Timbaland. Those of you who know anything about Timbaland are probably saying "oh for fuck's sake" right about now. For those who know nothing: he does this shit A LOT.

The resulting song got used in a big musician's album. I don't wanna doxx them and they want to be private, and disclosing what would expose them. So, suffice it to say: it was a successful album.

Anyway, she sued.

They settled for $12,000. Which the IRS wanted money afterwards. They took home about $7.5k or so.

They used this money to buy a used car.

Meanwhile: he made millions off the song upfront for his work.

That wasn't punishment or a deterrent, that was an accounting rounding error.

Timbaland still routinely does this, by the way, and most artists actually don't even bother fighting back, they put him on blast on social media and then nothing happens, because that's about all they can do.

That's how copyright works in the real world.

I wrote this article nearly two years ago but it’s just as relevant today.

I wish every healthcare worker would read it and realize patients deserve protection.

They deserve to be safe in the place they go to get care.

They deserve to feel valued and like their doctor understands the science.

They deserve masks in healthcare: disabledginger.com/p/a-plea-to

How can workers that want to reject and refuse degenerative technologies ("AI") stand in solidarity with each other and start organizing? How can we resist "AI" inevitability narratives in the workplace?

Many of us are increasingly required to use AI tools – often presented as "the only option" without any alternative; and no-one is informing us about our right to resist, object, and refuse. In many workplaces, expressing AI-critical sentiments has become a no-go, leaving workers silenced and with even less options to build networks of solidarity.

If you feel alone, alienated and silenced, don't despair!

Join us for this discussion panel about organizing towards AI Abolition in the workplace.

Time: Tuesday, September 15th, 16.30-18.00
Place: Copenhagen, CSS, Auditorium 35.01.44, Gammeltoftsgade 15

Codeberg.org was offline for a few minutes. We did a Ceph upgrade and noticed that it upgraded MDS services with disregard to keeping one MDS active. This meant our filesystem was unavailable due to no MDS being active and 'rejoining' takes a few minutes.

P.S. we are aware that status.codeberg.org has it's certificate expired and we are working on that.

Social Security was designed to replace about 40% of a worker's income — not to be a full retirement plan. As pension access has declined for decades, one study finds universal retirement access could cut elder poverty more than 25% by 2045. inthesetimes.com/article/big-i

Given Debian's recent vote to allow slop in their OS, I think we should have a second vote on whether or not to redirect the 500 GBP that we were going to donate to them somewhere else. I don't think they would have been a winner of our largesse if the votes were held today. #SocialCoopGovernance
