I got all my Nobel Prizes when the previous winner left a little bit of the next one sticking out of the machine and I kept pulling.

Age verification is spreading like cancer.

First they came for adults site and social media; now they are already discussing about putting VPNs and app stores behind #AgeVerfication 🇬🇧🇦🇺

What’s sold as “online safety” means #surveillance via IDs checks or face scans.

Privacy & anonymity protect journalists, whistleblowers & activists.

We must fight against age verification - or the free web dies!

There was a small snafu with the Git repository of GTK which required rewriting the history of the main development branch to drop a large file that was committed by mistake; if you have a local clone, you may need to force an update. Nothing else should have changed, and the latest commit is: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/c

TIL: The earliest use of the word "terrorism" identified by the Oxford English Dictionary is a 1795 reference to tyrannical state behavior, the "reign of terrorism" in France."

The term was coined to describe the actions of the state during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, where agents of the Committee of Public Safety, referred to as "Terrorists," enforced the government's policies with violence against perceived enemies.

Just FYI for all of you that used Interrail: looks like they had a breach including customer and reservation info. They also apparently took down the Ticket Inspection API during investigation today which apparently caused some issues in the UK, because UK apps still cannot actually read the barcodes properly...

RE: climatejustice.social/@termina

The whole reason the PC revolution was a "revolution" is because everyone was tired of renting processing space on mainframes. And like almost every revolution in human history, the revolution was followed by a bunch of rich people trying to recreate the previous regime. The cloud in practice is not much different from you leasing cycles on someone else's mainframe, but they try real hard to get you to ignore that part.

Senator Susan Collins killed the amendment to protect the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) -- perhaps the world's premier research center for work on #weather, #climate, models, and remote sensing. Remember that.

Over the last week or so I've been learning about the gold mining exploration in Sam's Creek, above the Cobb Valley in Golden Bay, and part of the Kahurangi National Park;

rnz.co.nz/news/national/542511

If you've been to any of the music festivals held in the Cobb since The Gathering moved there for their 2000-01 event, you'll know this is a beautiful, wild area. Rich in biodiversity, and far too beautiful to ruin by mining it for short term mineral profits.

Someone I know just said this:

'enshittification on laxatives'

Said in regards to YouTube having ppl pay to fast forward now..

Douglas Adams once said something, answering a question from a fan about whether Arthur Dent was a “hero”, and whether the Hitchhiker stories were “gaily whimsical” or cynical. The whole thing won't fit here (see: shreevatsa.net/post/douglas-ad) but quoting the main part:

> I suspect there is a cultural divide at work here. In England our heroes tend to be characters who either have, or come to realise that they have, no control over their lives whatsoever – Pilgrim, Gulliver, Hamlet, Paul Pennyfeather (from Decline and Fall), Tony Last (from A Handful of Dust). We celebrate our defeats and our withdrawals – the Battle of Hastings, Dunkirk, almost any given test match. There was a wonderful book published, oh, about twenty years ago I think, by Stephen Pile called the Book of Heroic Failures. It was staggeringly huge bestseller in England and sank with heroic lack of trace in the U.S. Stephen explained this to me by saying that you cannot make jokes about failure in the States. It’s like cancer, it just isn’t funny at any level. In England, though, for some reason it’s the thing we love most. So Arthur may not seem like much of a hero to Americans – he doesn’t have any stock options, he doesn’t have anything to exchange high fives about round the water-cooler. But to the English, he is a hero. Terrible things happen to him, he complains about it a bit quite articulately, so we can really feel it along with him - then calms down and has a cup of tea. My kind of guy!
>
> I’ve hit a certain amount of difficulty over the years in explaining this in Hollywood. I’m often asked ‘Yes, but what are his goals?’ to which I can only respond, well, I think he’d just like all this to stop, really. It’s been a hard sell.
