I've always thought "I have never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure." is a great quote. It's often attributed to Mark Twain, but according to Snopes he never uttered it. snopes.com/fact-check/mark-twa Ah well. I like it anyway, whoever coined it.

Loyalty Tax? Ugh.

Feeling anxious today because... the state of the world.

One thing that I keep thinking about - to maintain hope - is the cyclical nature of history.

The past decade have felt like a modern version of the Middle Ages (or Dark Ages).

But what followed that? The Renaissance and the Enlightenment. The Age of Reason.

I need to read up on all this to cultivate a positive outlook. To stay hopeful.

Big virtual hug to everyone who's having a hard day.

Hello all. I am very bad at asking for money. I find it very awkward. I have a paid subscription tier on my otherwise free newsletter, but it's not a popular one tbh. But if you have a few spare pennies and would like to support what I do I also have a Ko-fi too. Thank you!

Yes, we should despise Big Tech/Telecom's vile CEOs. But as @pluralistic says in his latest Pluralistic post, first blame the policy monsters -- among them, Robert Bork, Bruce Lehman, and Ajit Pai -- who enabled Tech's vicious and destructive monopolists pluralistic.net/2025/09/10/say

I love how the second part of Banksy's newest mural, which is a comment on censorship and oppression, was done by the very people he is critiquing.

Their response was predictable, and relied upon, and imho has created a masterpiece.

Is this solvable? Of course it is.

We're a big country with a lot of good farmland, skilled people, and wealth to invest in doing the job right.

The only thing standing in our way is ourselves- a fear of trust-busting, and nostalgia that blinds us to how agriculture & wealth really work.

It’s unsurprising that Eugene police have been crediting all their successes to license-plate readers, EFF’s Sarah Hamid told Lookout Eugene-Springfield; police often do that when Flock contracts are the subject of public outrage. “That is play-for-play from the playbook.” lookouteugene-springfield.com/

Journalists are being massacred in Gaza and the U.S. is doing nothing to stop the bloodbath it’s bankrolling.

* When searching for support online, you will get wide ranging advice. Often multiple suggestions might solve a problem. But if a suggestion starts with "Now open a terminal..." put a pin in that one, and start with one that solves your problem with graphical tools.

* With a modern Linux distro, a regular desktop user should be able to do everything they need to use their computer normally without ever opening a terminal. If not, it's a shortcoming in the distro. 2/2

A giant in the civil liberties field! We all owe a debt of gratitude to Cindy Cohn for her indelible leadership at @eff for so many years (and for being our legal counsel at FPF since our founding in 2012).
